The Minister of Education, Gideon Sa'ar, participated yesterday (Wednesday) in the announcement ceremony of the winners of the competition for young scientists and developers in Israel in the presence of the President of the State, Mr. Shimon Peres and the Minister of Science, MK Daniel Hershkowitz. Those who are in the first place are Erez Auerbach who developed a modern interpretation of the Prolog language (from the field of computer science) and Hilit Oranit who studied the influence of Georges Sorel's thoughts on Italian fascism.

During the speech, Minister Sa'ar referred to a number of programs carried out by the Administration of Science and Technology and the Division for the Gifted and Outstanding, designed to ensure the realization of the students' potential in all fields of science, knowledge and art. Among other things, the minister mentioned the program for scientific-technological reserve and leadership which was launched in the current academic year. The program accompanies the students to a high-quality matriculation certificate, with 5 units of mathematics, 5 units of a basic science subject and 5 units in an additional basic science or technological subject. The Minister of Education emphasized in this context: "The knowledge and skills that students will acquire on their way to the matriculation certificate will serve as a springboard for research and development in the fields of science and technology. The program is expected to double, within 5 years, the number of male and female students in Israel with an excellent scientific matriculation certificate. The goal is that within 5 years - 10% of the students of each cohort will have such a matriculation certificate."

The "Young Scientists and Developers in Israel" competition is a national competition, which is being held for the 14th year, as part of the National Science Week events starting near Albert Einstein's birthday. The best research and engineering projects carried out in the past year by high school students from all over the country compete in it.
The winners of the national competition represent Israel in competitions for young scientists and developers around the world and win Intel awards - study scholarships at higher education institutions in Israel.

Out of about 270 works submitted to this year's competition, 47 works from the fields of exact sciences, life sciences, engineering, computer sciences, social sciences and history advanced to the final stage. The competition is an important means to promote creativity in science and technology, to foster excellence in the fields of science and to present the scientific and technological achievements of young people in Israel in similar competitions around the world. The young winners are given the opportunity to collaborate with young scientists around the world.

The competition is held with the support of the Administration for Science and Technology in the Ministry of Education and Intel Israel.
