Observation of the 2007 "Persaid" meteor shower at Mitzpe Ramon in collaboration with Sde Har Hanegev High School

The Barkat observatory in Maccabi will conduct a special observation of the Perseid meteor shower. The activity will include lectures on the meteor shower, astronomical observations with telescopes, explanations of the constellations and a guided celestial tour. Movies will also be shown on a giant screen.

Date: On Sunday evening, between August 12-13, 2007, there will be a meteor shower over the sky of Israel.

The Barkat observatory in Maccabi, in cooperation with the director of the Maccabi Reut district, will conduct a special observation on the occasion of the Perseid meteor shower, an observation of over 70 meteors per hour.

Hours of operation: 22:00 to 01:30

Observation depends on proper sky conditions. Check that the sky is clear of clouds before arriving.

Place: Reut's water tower.

For the purpose of the event, the public lighting in the area will be darkened and the parking lot of the shopping center will be used for the events.

Parking: There will be no entrance to the water tower by car. Parking in the commercial center of Reut only.

On 12-08-2007, Sunday, we will hold a special day of study and observation of the Perseid meteor shower, at Sde Har Hanegev School, Mitzpe Ramon.

14:00 to 17:00 Visit to the Wise Observatory.
Guided tours of the Wise Observatory of Tel Aviv University. The tours, which last 20 minutes, left every fifteen minutes. The tours will take place in the observatory complex. The Wise Observatory will be closed to visitors after 17:00. (See attached map).

19:30 into the night - astronomical activities at Sde Har Hanegev School.

20:00 – 23:00 Star-themed activities for children

21:00 until morning astronomical observation in the southern complex of a field school.
Observation is accompanied by explanations using several telescopes on different celestial bodies.
Explanations for the knowledge of the sky.
Meteor observation (by eye) - starting at 23:00 p.m.

For observation, it is recommended to equip yourself with darkened flashlights (by red cellophane), lounge chairs, warm clothing, drinks.
Participation in activities is free of charge

General instructions:

Tents can be set up in the field school complex for a fee

Do not light a fire or barbecue.
Drinks and food can be purchased at the field school during the entire event

Movement in the dark is dangerous - you must move with personal flashlights. In order not to disturb the astronomical observation, the personal flashlights must be darkened with cellophane or red nylon.
