Fuel produced from organic waste will drive buses

Vision: The most inferior by-products of human existence - including wastewater - will be converted into clean organic fuel for public transportation

As part of an experimental project initiated by Warren Wiseman, a consultant who heads the Oregon Organic Fuel Cooperative, the first bus will be fueled with fuel produced at a sewage treatment plant in Eugene, Oregon. Wiseman believes that eventually all buses in the city will be able to run on organic fuel produced from sewage water, supplemented with plant fibers and leftover food from restaurants.

The fuel is produced in a process of digestion without air, when bacteria break down organic waste without oxygen. Hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide are removed from the fuel, and the remaining natural gas (mainly hydrogen) is compressed.

The organic fuel will not be enough for all the cars that drive on the roads, but it can be used as a substitute for polluting and non-renewable fuels, such as diesel, which are currently used in public transportation. Unlike natural fuel that comes from oil drilling, the organic fuel does not contribute net to the greenhouse effect because its combustion does not release carbon that was until now hidden in fossil deposits.

In various cities in Switzerland, France, Spain and Iceland, sewage water is already being used to produce fuel for buses, while in the city of Linkoping in Sweden, the entire fleet of buses is already running on fuel produced from organic materials such as fertilizer and leftovers from slaughterhouses. Linkping also operates the first passenger train - and probably the only one in the world - that uses organic fuel.

obstacles

High output requires precise dosing of the waste components. Using only sewage water yields a low yield, and therefore the recipe must be supplemented with waste from other sources. Also, the traffic to the production sites reduces the efficiency of the process.

Expected

The Oregon Department of Energy's Clean Cities Program allocated $XNUMX million in funding, but the actual implementation of the project was delayed for several years so that other improvements to the treatment plant could be focused first. -Don Stover

Homemade green energy

From now on, after you finish a long session in the toilet, instead of flushing the water, you can transfer the produce to the facility in the backyard - together with leftover food left in the kitchen. Sintex Industries, a manufacturer of plastic products from India, has developed a home device that produces small amounts of methane gas - enough to run a stove, washing machine or generator. The facility, with a volume of one thousand liters, can be fed with human excrement and food scraps from the kitchen. While the materials are turned into fertilizer, methane gas is produced which is transferred to storage tanks. For now, the system is offered only in India, but similar self-built facilities are already operating in the USA.

What you don't take into account is that the methane gas eventually got out of there anyway and the question is only if you catch it and use it or if you let it warm the atmosphere instead.
More than that: if you capture it and use it, it no longer returns to the atmosphere as methane.

  2. The contribution of one molecule of methane to the greenhouse effect is 22 times greater than that of a molecule of carbon dioxide.
When bacteria create the methane in a state of lack of oxygen from decomposing manure
This is a new introduction of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
When in a normal situation in a natural decomposition with oxygen the methane gas would not have been formed.

  3. age,
Methane gas (CH4) or in English Methane does not contain chlorine as far as I know.
The gas does accelerate global warming as well as its combustion products (carbon dioxide). At the same time, the gas in this case and the result of its burning, give a net zero new input of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere, in contrast to the burning of fossil fuels - as indicated in the article.

  4. Methane gas contains chlorine that destroys the ozone and accelerates global warming
Methane gas is created in the most impressive quantities also from the decomposition of sewage water, plus vegetable fibers and food leftovers from restaurants by bacteria without oxygen.

  5. Good luck with the project.
The article says that hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide are removed from the resulting vapor mixture. Does anyone know or does anyone have an idea how to remove the hydrogen sulfide without oxygenating the system? (Za how do you even get the sulfur out of there, not just oxidize it to sulfate).
