Prof. Miriam Erez was appointed chairman of the Council for the Advancement of Women in Science and Technology

The Minister of Science and Technology, MK Prof. Daniel Hershkovitz, appointed Prof. Miriam Erez as the Chairman of the Council for the Advancement of Women in Science and Technology. Erez replaces Prof. Mina Teicher in this position. This, according to a government decision from December 2000 according to which the Council for the Advancement of Women in Science was established. The appointment is valid for three years.

The Minister of Science and Technology, Rabbi Prof. Daniel Hershkovitz: "Prof. Miriam Erez is an outstanding scientist and winner of the Israel Prize, who dealt, among other things, with the issue of advancing women in academia, and therefore I am sure of her ability to contribute to the issue of advancing women in science at the national level." Minister Hershkovitz thanked Prof. Erez for her willingness to undertake this important task and wished her success in fulfilling her duties.

Prof. Miriam Erez: "While many times there is a conflict of interests between the good of the individual and the good of the common good, when it comes to promoting women in science and technology, the good of the individual is also the good of the common good. Advancing women in science and technology strengthens the status of women personally in the professional and socio-economic field on the one hand, and contributes to strengthening the professional manpower which is critical to standing up to global competition, on the other hand. Strengthening the professional status of women in science and technology will allow them to have a greater influence on decision-making in the organizations in which they are employed and contribute to a higher quality of life and a better world. The strength of the country depends on the level of its manpower, which can be strengthened with the help of women entering the leading fields of science and technology."

The roles of the Council for the Advancement of Women in Science and Technology are to coordinate between the state, public and private factors related to the advancement of women in science, to initiate activities aimed at the advancement of women in science, the concentration of Israeli activity vis-à-vis the European Union, and to raise public awareness of problems related to the advancement of women in science.

The council is made up of representatives from among the chief scientists in the government ministries, the director of the Science Administration at the Ministry of Education, the director of the Institute for Technological Training at the TMT, a representative of the TMT, the chairman of the Industry Management Forum, a Han officer.

Miriam Erez, Professor of Organizational Psychology and holder of the Mendes Farnes Chair of Management and Economics, in the Faculty of Industrial Engineering and Management, at the Technion founded the Innovation Knowledge Center, which aims to serve as a source of knowledge on innovation issues for industry, academia and government and to promote innovation in Israeli industry. Winner of the Israel Award in Management Sciences for 2005. In 2002 she received an international award from the International Association for Applied Psychology. Her research deals with creativity and innovation in the world of work, cultural differences in organizational behavior, cultural characteristics of the global work environment, as well as work motivation.

Prof. Erez served as dean of the faculty in 1996-1998 and currently holds the position of deputy dean for MBA studies as well as coordinator of the status of women at the Technion. Erez appears among the most cited researchers in organizational psychology between 1983-2004.

Erez is a member of the board of directors of the Haifa Economic Company and the Hi-Center hothouse in Haifa. She is also an honorary member of international associations such as: the Academy of Management, USA, also served as a member of the executive committee, the American Psychological Association, and the International Association for Applied Psychology, where she is a member of the executive committee and served as president of the organizational division. She also served as the editor of the international journal: Psychology: An International Review Applied.
