Minister Akunis: "Space Week is held this year to mark 70 years of Israeli innovation"

The Israel Space Week events led by the Israel Space Agency at the Ministry of Science opened yesterday, January 28, across the country to mark 70 years of Israeli innovation. About 20 activities will be held throughout the week throughout the country including: an escape room symbolizing the future of space, observations, an exhibition of Israel's space achievements, a planetarium, building personal telescopes and rockets, lectures by astronauts and more. The events, which will last all week, are being held for the sixth year to commemorate the legacy of the first Israeli astronaut, Ilan Ramon.

According to the Minister of Science and Technology Ofir Akunis: "The activities open free to the general public contribute to the training of the younger generation in the fields of science, engineering and space, expose the general public to Israeli activities in the field and to the new discoveries in the field, igniting the imagination and curiosity."

Akunis added: "This year we are holding this space week as a sign of 70 years of statehood, 70 years of innovation, something that pleases not only the Israelis among us, but certainly the members of the entire Jewish people, in Israel and in the Diaspora."

At the main event at the Land of Israel Museum in Tel Aviv, an escape room simulating a journey through space was inaugurated where the participants today for the first time passed between Israeli projects of satellites, asteroids, spacecraft, space suits and comets. The space suit designed by Alon Livna together with the Israel Space Agency in the Ministry of Science for the Mars simulation project D-mars was also presented in the complex, as well as Israeli space technologies were presented including: a super-space computer, an antenna that opens in space, a Venus environmental satellite, a tiny laboratory in space, a satellite built by students, Israeli launcher and satellites.

Today, January 29, the Ilan Ramon International Space Conference will open in collaboration with the Yuval Na'eman workshop, with the participation of six heads of agencies from around the world, senior officials in the space industry, astronauts and entrepreneurs. Among the prominent events: an astronaut panel, seven Israeli start-ups in the field of space will present the latest innovations, and the presentation of the Israeli structure for simulating Mars.

  1. Space Week is marked by the destruction of the Israeli communication satellite industry and the intention to order a satellite from a foreign company, instead of developing it in Israel. We will also celebrate in a special way the expected loss of our point in the geostationary orbit.
