Israel was chosen to host the World Space Congress in 2015 - this was announced last weekend in Naples, Italy, at the annual congress of the International Astronautical Federation, which is the world's largest space gathering. The proposal submitted by the Israel Space Agency to the Ministry of Science and Technology to host the convention in Jerusalem surpassed the proposals of Thailand and Mexico.

The Federation's World Space Congress is held every year in October, each time in a different country, and attracts more than 3,000 scientists, heads of space agencies and space industry people from around the world. The gathering lasts about a week and is the summit gathering in the field where the latest innovations, emerging trends and space policy at the national and international level are discussed among other things.

The International Astronautical Federation is the world's largest international body in the field of space, with approximately 250 members from around the world. The federation works to promote knowledge and product development in the field by encouraging international collaborations.

In Israel, the convention will be held in Jerusalem and will attract a lot of tourism. The convention includes about 30 symposia, including about 2,000 lectures by representatives from about 70 countries, as well as a huge space exhibition of exhibits from all over the world. The proposal submitted by the agency highlighted the uniqueness of the occupation of space in Israel, the special character of Jerusalem, as well as the wall-to-wall support of the government officials in the State of Israel in hosting the convention. Among the bodies this year that supported Israel's proposal were also President Shimon Peres, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the Knesset, the Supreme Court, the management of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Jerusalem Municipality.

"I am very happy that our great efforts to bring the convention to Jerusalem bore fruit, and that most of the representatives of the member states of the federation supported Israel's proposal to host the convention in Jerusalem. This is a respectable achievement, reflecting Israel's special position as a world power in the field of space. The thousands of visitors from around the world at the convention will after him become Israel's ambassadors to the world in the field of space and tourism" congratulated the Minister of Science and Technology Prof. Daniel Hershkowitz on the achievement.

"The choice of Israel to host the conference is a recognition of Israel's growing position in the field of space and can give significant impetus to the space industries in Israel," said today the Chairman of the Israel Space Agency, Prof. Col. (Ret.) Yitzhak Ben-Israel, who was also elected at the current conference as a member of the Academy International Astronautics for Life.

"We worked for an entire year on a comprehensive proposal that would honor Israel and the convention, bring honor to Israel and the Israeli Space Agency, and indeed the investment has proven itself. and will lead to the promotion of activity in space, in academia and in industry," explains the Director of the Israel Space Agency, Menachem Kidron.
