Could NASA announce the discovery of organic molecules on Mars?

The chief investigator of the Curiosity mission was interviewed by the NPR radio station and estimated that there is a chance for such an announcement, although NASA wants to lower expectations, because the data analysis has not yet been completed

The excavations were done using Curiosity's excavation device that collected samples for testing inside the vehicle at the SAM facility, which is designed to search for signatures of organic molecules - the building blocks of life. The web is buzzing with rumors and estimates that the Mars rover Curiosity has made a discovery that will shake the heads of the sages and go down in the history books. This follows a radio interview conducted by NPR science reporter Joe Falke with the mission's principal investigator, John Grotzinger from his office at Caltech. NPR reported the story on Thursday, November 20.

"We plan to discuss the results on Monday, December 3," Grotzinger tells the editor of Universe Today.

Indeed, Grotzinger is expected to give a lecture on the SAM findings and their possible implications at the annual meeting of the American Geophysical Society to be held on December 3-7 in San Francisco, where many articles summarizing the scientific research carried out by Curiosity during its first three months on Mars will be presented.

"Members of the science team are analyzing the data from the ground probes conducted by SAM, but are not ready to discuss it yet," says JPL press officer Guy Webster.

Curiosity collected and analyzed the reddened soil samples for over a month in a wave of dirt collected with the wind that the researchers called "Rocknest". So far, the Curiosity rover has dug into the Martian soil five times and delivered one soil sample to the SAM and two others to the chemical probe CheMin. "The data will definitely go down in the history books," Grotzinger added in a conversation with NPR. "They look good."

However, Webster suggests being patient and lowering expectations. According to him, the team is still trying to interpret and understand the SAM data and seek to clarify its meaning before making far-reaching statements and conclusions.

"Being Jewish" is passed down from the mother. I didn't set it up. It happens automatically. If only the father is Jewish - you have to undergo conversion and all this nonsense. (That's how I know - am I wrong?).

Aborigines have many creation stories and we don't know how old they really are. The aboriginal people are the oldest in the world, at least 40 and maybe even 60 thousand years.
According to their stories, the earth and the sky have always existed. The fact that they have a creation story says something about the human soul - it doesn't say anything about the truth of the stories.
There is no reason, except for religious belief, to attribute any truth to the creation stories in the Torah. If you think otherwise - you have to explain to yourself why the stories in the Bible are true and not the stories of the Greeks for example.
Think about how you explain this to a Japanese or a Norwegian - why is the biblical story truer than their stories?

You are right about the advantage that security in religion provides. Studies show that religious people are happier.
This is also true for marijuana.

What am I supposed to understand from the rest of the Genesis reading?

Now - what does the right to exist of the State of Israel have to do with the existence of God? These are the peoples of the world who have determined that the Jews are different and that they have no right to live in many countries. The return to Israel is an initiative of the secular and not of the religious. To this day it is like that.
Understand correctly - I am full of appreciation for religious Zionism. In general, they are good, honest people, have a great family life, contribute to society and the environment. I served with excellent fighters from religious Zionism.
But that doesn't mean there is a God. And this does not mean that I, as a complete secularist, have a problem justifying my right to be in Israel.
The meaning is not religious, nor historical, it is cultural. get used to it.

  2. Miracles,
    a quote:
"Doesn't Judaism sanctify race? Why is it so easy to be Jewish if your mother is Jewish, and so hard when your mother is Christian?"
What is the connection of the second part to the first?
After all, genes or "race" is passed down from both parents and not just from one of them, so what you wrote is meaningless.

Thanks for reinforcing my point about the aborigines.
    explanation:
In the Bible there are chapters on the creation of the world, the creation of man, etc.
That is, when the people of Israel received the Bible, it was written there about the past of the world,
So it is likely that other nations will also believe it because they too are descendants of what was not? like the aborigines
who believe that man came from the earth.
It is unlikely that they did not pass these truths on to their descendants...
Although many of them changed the story of creation a little/a lot, such as Anuma Elish, etc.
But the basis is the same, starting with the Babylonian people and ending with the aborigines.
Do you think it is reasonable that so many different origins, from different places have a kernel of truth that is equal to all?
And if so, it is interesting that in all other things they are different from others and they are the ones that distinguish them apart from no more than 3 basic beliefs.

Psychologically, yes, faith creates mental security for the human being (regardless of which religion) because he "leans"
about his belief and feels strongly grounded, but that does not mean that if there was a belief that was true this phenomenon would have existed
    Different right?

Regarding transcending time and place, if you read the Torah beyond Genesis XNUMX+XNUMX, you will understand on your own.

And even if you don't believe, like many like you, where did the right to establish a state for the Jewish people come from?
(And don't write to me about a nation that was copied from its place because there are thousands of such nations, and it's not like tomorrow everyone will want to return
to their sources), the right is from the Torah!
And if so, then how can it be denied? The color is not historical, but religious.

  3. EPR
I was born to a Jewish mother and therefore I belong to the Jewish people and to the Jewish religion. What I got from my mother is half of my genes. Do you think there is more to it? I do not.

Again - I did not say that there is a dress code in Judaism. But there are definitely dress codes that belong to Judaism. It's stupid and it's disgusting - but it exists.

Judaism does not sanctify race? Why is it so easy to be Jewish if your mother is Jewish, and so hard when your mother is Christian? Why is there genetic kinship between the Jews?

I don't understand what you want about the diversity of Jews in Israel. Is this variety good or bad?

Each religion is different and unique compared to the other religions. What is special about the uniqueness of Judaism?

I don't know why you say the name is beyond time or beyond place from thousands of years ago. Where is it written in the Torah?
And by the way - do you know the aborigines in Australia? They have been one people for 50000 years and even with them their creator is outside of time and space.

Judaism does not seem ridiculous to me. Do not understand that I have something against Judaism per se. I don't differentiate between Judaism, Christianity, Paganism, Santa Claus or the Loch Ness Monster. I don't mean to be offensive but these are all the same to me - things that don't exist. There are beautiful things in Judaism and in every other religion. And there is a great deal of wisdom in Judaism.
But - I don't believe in anything close to God or the Creator. I see no reason to think there is such a thing. I can explain (to myself at least) where religions came from and why people believe these things.
That doesn't make that belief true.

  4. First, your problem is that you do not make the basic distinction between Jews and Judaism.
No, there is no dress code in Judaism!! It is that certain communities have decided one way or another
In order to distinguish them from others, I do not say that it is part of the Jewish religion!

Second, I liked your implications that in the gardens I don't understand, again, I'm sorry but you show
Lack of depth of thought. The Jewish religion is not concerned with gardens at all. The same diseases that are typical
For Jews - Ashkenazim, are not expressed among Jews from other sources who were not in contact with them!
    Judaism does not sanctify race!

It's quite ridiculous that you write "If I were you, I wouldn't be happy about the great variety of Jews in Israel"
How did you come to the conclusion that I am happy about this news??

    a quote:
"What is my basic assumption? You're claiming that it's wrong - I'd love to understand what you're talking about"
Your basic assumption is that Judaism is only a religion that is cataloged according to the categories of the social sciences, that is, it lacks difference and uniqueness from other religions.

It's not that I think Judaism is fundamentally different from any other religion, but I know it!
One of the basic beliefs of Judaism for thousands of years is that the name transcends time and space,
Definitely "revolutionary" for that time don't you think?
And the most beautiful thing is that this truth is firm and exists even today.
Compared to belief in statues, etc. which today seem more ridiculous for the truth.
If Judaism seems ridiculous to you, it is likely that you know nothing and a half about it.

Is there no dress code in Judaism? So how is it that I identify a religious Jew by his clothing in most cases? There is not just one dress code, and there are many believers who do not dress according to one of the codes. A dress code is meant to distinguish who is in our forces and who is not. There is nothing wrong with that. It's like a uniform in every field.

In Judaism, and in many religions, there are many things that are not material. Some of them are beautiful and important - and they are also part of the secular world.

You don't understand in the gardens. I am Jewish because my mother is Jewish. That's the only reason. Half of my genes are from my mother. Half of her genes are from her grandmother and so on. We know about diseases that are characteristic of Jews.
If I were you, I would not be happy about the large variety of Jews in Israel - it shows assimilation and only strengthens my argument.

Do you seriously think Judaism is fundamentally different from any other religion?

What is my basic assumption? You claim that it is wrong - I would love to understand what you are talking about.

  6. Miracles,
It is clear to me that you know nothing about Judaism.
First, there is no dress code in Judaism,
The whole material culture founded in Judaism is only a part
From Judaism itself, each religion of course has its material and spiritual customs/culture,
It is meaningless to generalize one thing over many and analyze it as one piece.
Most of you do not know what Judaism is at all, you have some kind of barriers that you have created
For yourself, according to her understanding, probably for psychological reasons and the influence of the environment on you.

Second, it is meaningless to claim that Judaism is a particular set of genes, if you live in Israel
Understand for yourself the difference between Jews of different origin.

Your attempt to claim that Judaism is just another religion with a certificate that you get after conversion
And the like is quite ridiculous, for the simple reason that you and your ilk drew your conclusions
stems from a wrong basic premise, which is the lack of understanding of what the Jewish religion is.

In your response you completed my words, and thank you for that.

  7. EPR
If you want to be a pedant - Judaism is a certain group of genes, or a certificate that you receive after conversion.
Everything else is secular, religious, ultra-Orthodox, rituals, foods, customs and clothing.

  8. To all responders,
    Start organizing your thoughts.

First of all, there is no human "colony" on Mars, you better start
    grow up.

Yes, the probability of the existence of life outside the Earth according to reasonable logic tends to 1,
This does not mean that they criticized here, or any number of hypotheses of one kind or another, until proven otherwise.

From a religious point of view, it is unnecessary and even ridiculous to blame it on religion for the simple reason that many
Mix the Jewish religion with other religions, each separate religion, with different basic assumptions, or beliefs
    variance.

Many of you do not really know what Judaism is, but according to what you are fed by the media,
Judaism is not religious, secular, ultra-Orthodox.

  9. It's really sad that the only reasoning given here for "What does it matter if there are organic materials on Mars?" That it will hurt the religious. Science no longer has value in itself, but to contradict religion?

  10. As usual, NASA's lies already decades ago are on Mars with a human colony...
    and other friends.

The drizzle started several years ago and the rain is coming soon for you.

  11. How many idle debates about this or that organic compound, every reasonable person has long since drawn the obvious conclusion that the universe is teeming with life, it doesn't matter what they find or not find on Mars, most of NASA's "discoveries" are for political needs and receiving resources from the government , if NASA would really reveal what it knows, the world would change from end to end..

  12. Daniel Nachmani:

I searched on Google and did not find any publication similar to what you claimed (amino acids ... segments of 50 bases ... and all). Are you sure this is a certified finding and not just a rumor?

There are blogs and columns on the Internet that spread all sorts of rumors and speculations. You may have read such dubious material., you should rely only on reputable newspapers that will avoid spreading rumors.

According to my memory, there was a case of reporting the finding of a complex organic substance on Mars, finally it turned out that the substance was brought from Earth.

As long as you do not bring a reliable source regarding the findings, it is better to treat your words as hearsay only.

  13. Daniel Nachmani,
Are you serious? Where did you get the information from?
Permeative DNA molecules on Mars? Wow!
Even as one who believes there is life on other stars, this is still surprising and amazing!
Do you think that such a thing, if verified, will speed up the plans to reach Mars?

Well, you have to wait patiently...

  14. It turns out that nucleic acid sequences were found in segments of up to 50 bases but without a double helix, which could correspond to a primitive DNA template identified in rocks from the Mesozoic period in Namibia.
If this is true, it will be important news that will shock creationists of all kinds.

  15. SAFKAN
I do not understand your assertion that there is an exaggeration. Don't you have a twinkle in your eye when you think that maybe there is, or was, life out there?

Everything you say is true, organic compounds really aren't hard to find or make. But why spoil the hope (of some people at least)?

  16. There is a great deal of exaggeration on this site and other sites about finding signs of life on Mars. My guess is that no signs of life have been found yet, like, they haven't found anything close to signs of life either.

Organic compounds in the solar system are not that rare. They don't only exist on meteorites, there are considerable amounts of organic compounds on Saturn's moon Titan. including among others nitrogen, ethene and matan. Search for a link to English Wikipedia using the keywords TITAN SATURN MOON

Unfortunately, I am unable to insert directly here the link to the entry TITAN (Moon of Saturn) in English Wikipedia.

also. According to my recollection, in the emission of volcanoes on Earth there is a small emission of ethane or matan or both. Obviously, the emission of these materials by volcanoes does not indicate that there are living organisms in the lava layer of the Earth. All in all, there are a number of organic substances that can be formed in significant quantities without any life processes.

I bet that on Mars the SAM lab found one of these simple organic substances or their *chemical* derivatives (not *biological* derivatives).

(The SAM laboratory, according to what I understood, is the name of the chemical laboratory of the rover Curiosity. The rover Curiosity is the rover that was placed on Mars this year, it is the rover that the latest news is about.)

  17. Not that I believe in these fairy tales, but it doesn't seem to me that plants and trees die from one day without sun...

  18. Why should the religious issue be discussed so much, it is quite clear that these are legends created by humans, creation stories exist in almost every culture that has ever been created on earth, each story contradicts the other.

It's time to disconnect from the world of fairy tales and connect to the times in which we live.

  19. Miracles, I'm just relying on the title of the article:

"Could NASA Announce Discovery of Organic Molecules on Mars?"

It doesn't say that they are going to announce the discovery of green aliens.

  20. Just another toothpick for the fire,
According to creation, how long is exactly one day? (And how was there even a concept of a day even before the earth (or as it were) was created...)
And one more small thing, how is it possible that the sun, the moon and the stars were created a day after the plants...

  21. I didn't think you were religious... Saturday now :).

There are laws that come from religion and I try very hard to ignore them when I can. Marriage laws, burial and such.

There are laws that exist in religion, but their origin is not religious - murder, theft, etc. They originate in morality and I would uphold them even without the laws.

And there are laws designed for the proper management of a country, such as tax, property and contract laws. I keep these because otherwise I will be in prison.

  22. I have to agree with your last statement regarding the management of life (if for a moment you thought I was religious, then no, despite the fact that the modern legal systems rely quite a lot on the guiding principles of the Tanach and therefore you also manage your life according to it), I simply think that it is not good to tower over other people and deny the Their belief is based on ignorance of things.

The Tanakh is a philosophical-religious-historical book with a very deep meaning, Judaism does not end with the Tanach but begins with it, Jewish thought developed the ideas embodied in this book.

Just as Newton's theory was developed and looks unrecognizably different from that simplistic theory presented by Newton (who must not have heard of the principle of minimal action) so too did yours.

  23. EH

I don't see how light and darkness can be attributed to the first stars. Stars can only be seen at night.

"Produce and multiply" is written in Genesis chapter 2 verse XNUMX - it's not exactly "long after" - it's exactly XNUMX verses!!!

You are the one who represents the Bible as a historical book. Don't blame others.

The Bible contains a lot of stories and also a little (very) history. It has stories of heroism, folk tales and horror stories.

It's a shame that people lead their lives by a book.

  24. You're right, I meant planets and small stars... After all, the separation between light and darkness can be attributed to the formation of the first stars.

"Peru and Rabu" is written much later, so it is not related.

I will apologize when they stop calling you:
    1. A history book - a book that describes the world as an accurate historical description.
    2. Foggy stories - nothing to expand on.

  25. EH
It says "produce and multiply and fill the earth" - I don't think it means Mars...

Apart from that - on the third day life was created - in particular "and the earth brought forth grass, grass, sowing seed of its kind, and a tree bearing fruit, etc."

According to the biblical text, the lights are nothing but sources of light.

We know for sure that living things were created many, many (many!!) years after the stars. The heavy elements are the result of supernovae that happen at the end of the lives of stars.

    So apologize to Emmanuel……

  26. And Immanuel, don't exalt yourself over people when you don't understand what you're talking about, if you find me a verse where it says "And the Lord created man on the earth" I have flown, note that the plants were created before the lights, interesting isn't it? That is, according to the biblical text, it can be understood that organic productions developed even before the stars, reminds me of something.
Apart from that, read some even non-modern interpretation of Maimonides, for example, there is a chance that you will find many points to think about there, our Judaism is much deeper than what you are trying to describe here, Alec a fugitive story.

  27. To Ori this means that God did not create life only on earth
This is a blow below the belt for all those who believe in the stories of the creator of the Bible

  28. Even if so - I don't understand what the enthusiasm is, after all, comets containing organic substances have already been discovered in the past. Even in Miller's famous experiment, organic molecules were created - we are not talking about living beings, not even bacteria.
