The launch into space that did not exist

What exactly Iran launched yesterday is not clear. There was no space rocket

By Tal Inbar, senior researcher, Fisher Institute for Strategic Air and Space Research

On the morning of Sunday, February 25.2.2007, 1, news began to appear in the various media that Iran had successfully launched a missile into space. Some sources described the launch as the launch of an Iranian satellite launched using a self-developed launcher. The source of the news was a report on Iranian television, a report that was transmitted around the world by the "Al Jazeera" website and by the French news agency. In a broadcast on state television, Mohammad Mohsen Baharami, head of the Iranian Space Research Center, said that this is the result of research efforts by the ministries of defense and science. (XNUMX)

However, Iranian websites (including the news agencies IRNA, MEHR NEWS and FARS) did not report the event, which if it did take place would have been sensational and received enormous exposure. In a number of forums dealing with Iran's military and security issues (including Irandefence.net and Iranmilitaryforum.com) Iranian surfers began to glorify and praise the achievement. However, until late afternoon, no official news appeared to support the initial information, nor were any photos of the launcher that allegedly carried out the flight published the experiment.

The media in Israel published extensive news about the Iranian test (2) and noted that it was a "successful launch of a missile into space" (3) and "according to estimates, the launch is part of Iran's attempts to launch commercial satellites into space. Iran has announced many times that it strives to achieve an independent launch capability of satellites." (4).

It should be noted that assessments in the various media outlets in Israel and abroad were based, among other things, on the report of the magazine "Aviation week and space technology" according to which the launch date of an Iranian satellite on a self-developed launcher is getting closer (5). The English website of "Al Jazeera" published a vague text about the experiment according to "a rocket that had reached space" (6). According to this description, it is not possible to know whether a missile was launched, a heavy military rocket, a meteorological research tool, or whether it is Iranian disinformation at all.

In the afternoon (February 25.2.2007, 7) NRG's military correspondent, Amir Bohbot, prepared an extended article on the subject. In this article, doubts were expressed about the credibility of the Iranian statement, in the absence of official supporting reports (XNUMX).

In the afternoon, the research center published a correction to the original news and clarified that the missile launched was only a test missile that did not leave the atmosphere. Ali Akbar Golro, deputy director of the research center, told the Fars news agency that the missile that was launched was not intended to enter orbit around the earth, but only to rise to a height of 150 km into the atmosphere and then fall back to the ground. (8). As of 16:30 Israel time, correcting news began to appear in the media, according to which the launch included a high-altitude meteorological rocket test.
