IBM and the Department of Medical Studies at the University of Texas are harnessing IBM's global community computing system, a sort of "virtual supercomputer" to enable more efficient laboratory tests for the development of a vaccine for, among other things, swine flu
Accelerating processing with the help of IBM's serial processing system, which includes more than 1.2 million personal computers of volunteers around the world, will, according to predictions, allow shortening the computerized testing times of new drugs to less than a month.
The researchers at the University of Texas will use IBM's global supercomputer system to analyze the structure of the chemical substances that show the highest potential to stop the spread of the flu virus. After the identification at the level of the computerized model - it will be possible to start experiments in laboratory conditions more quickly. The computerized work makes it possible to compress thousands of years of processing into a time frame of a few months. The researchers predict that up to 10% of the chemical substances that will be tested in the computerized system will show the potential to eventually become drugs - and will move to the second stage of testing.
Relying on IBM's global peripheral computing system will save many months of expensive work in laboratory experiments, which were required for the initial screening task, before entering the clinical trials phase.
The joint project between IBM and the University of Texas makes use of the processing power of more than 1.2 million computers and systems, and hundreds of thousands of users who volunteered to offer their computers' computing power at times when it is not fully required. IBM's global community-based computing system will run virtual chemical experiments, which will determine which molecules out of the millions of substances known and recognized in the world today may bind to the influenza virus and stop its spread. The prediction that the computer will provide will be tested, later, in laboratory experiments and clinical trials - which are the next steps before bringing the drug to the market.
All the results of research in the environment of IBM's global community network computing system will be available free of charge, for the use of the scientific-medical community.
