China has overtaken the United States in the supercomputer performance chart

The Tianhe-1A computer system from the China National Supercomputer Center took first place after achieving a performance level of 2.57 petaflops per second ● Although China is at the top of the list, most of the systems on the list of the 500 most powerful supercomputers are still in the United States

No more rumors - now it's official: the Tianhe-1A computer system from the Chinese National Supercomputing Center has achieved performance at the level of 2.57 petaflops per second (a quadrillion calculations per second). This achievement places the system in first place in the 36th edition of the list The 500 most powerful supercomputers in the world - This was stated by the organization that produces the list. The computer that has so far been in first place - Cray XT5, known as "Jaguar", from the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility of the US Department of Energy in Tennessee - has been relegated to second place on the list. The rating is based on an examination of each computer in the organization's Linpack software.

In third place is the Nebulae computer from Shenzhen, China, with a rate of 1.27 petaflops per second; In fourth place - the Tsubame 2.0 system from the Tokyo Institute of Technology, with a rate of 1.19 peta-flops per second; And in fifth place - Hopper, a Cray XE6 system from the National Computer Center for Energy Science Research of the US Department of Energy in California, with a rate of 1.05 petaflops per second.

The two Chinese computers and the Japanese computer have Nvidia graphics processors installed to accelerate performance. In total, such accelerators are installed in 28 systems out of the 500 systems on the list, where Cell processors are installed in 16 systems, Nvidia processors in 10 systems and AMD Radeon processors in two.

Seven systems on the list achieved better than 1 peta-flop per second. Five of the top 10 systems are from the United States, and the rest are from China, Japan, France and Germany. Although the United States lost, as mentioned, first place to China, the Americans are still the leader in the use of high-performance systems, and 275 of the 500 systems on the list are in it (in the list prepared last June, there were 282 systems in the United States). The share of Europe also decreased compared to June - 124 systems in the current list compared to 144 in June. Asia's share increased in the corresponding period from 57 systems to 84.

The leading manufacturers of supercomputers are still American companies: IBM at the top, followed by Cray and in third place HP. Intel processors are installed in more than 81% of the top 500 computers, AMD Opteron processors are installed in 11% and IBM Power processors in 8%.

More details on the new list will be announced at the SC10 conference for high-performance computing, networking, storage and analytics, which will be held on November 17 in New Orleans.

  1. What about Israel? - It is known that in the eighties the Americans refused to approve the sale of CRAY to Israel and therefore the parallel computer was developed at the Technion - but I do not know what the situation is today. - Does anyone have an answer?

  2. This money was made on the backs of hundreds of millions of Chinese who work in slave conditions, when there is a revival there, China will be in serious trouble.

  3. The Chinese really want to create this impression, I'm not saying that they are not getting stronger, but a country of more than a billion and a half inhabitants has a lot of money, even when it was backward 40 years ago, today it burns a lot of it instead of on the residents, repeating all such things, there are two Such computers in China as you saw, not 282, and it is likely that the main reason for their existence is to show that they have a bigger one, Russia also at the time worked on the method of doing things by "showing the Americans" and they reached bankruptcy, I am not claiming that China will go bankrupt but You don't need to be excited about that, she also burned tens of billions until the Olympics to impress, it's not like you'll see impressive scientific progress from China when it's not related to military power..

  4. How Digger ran on it, more interesting.

Besides, it is very interesting to watch in real time China's scientific intensification to unprecedented levels. Russia was not discussed at all in this article. And to think that once upon a time they wouldn't have counted the Chinese with their one child policy. I wonder what the real secret is there. They have the Japanese determination and the Indian quantity and perhaps also quite a few resources directed to science instead of a failed aggressive communist agenda. It will be fascinating to see them grow in the next decade and take the world forward while the Americans are busy conquering territories in Asia.

I only hope that Israel will know how to get the most out of all these worlds and one hour earlier.

    Greetings friends,
