Measuring heart muscle cell beats for a few minutes (left) does indeed reveal deviations from the ideal beat rhythm - a beat every second - but when this is done over several hours (right) a new pattern is revealed: slower or faster than average beats that appear in clusters of 10 to 30 minutes
