Monarch butterflies in Mexico. These butterflies take off from the ground. During their migration they have been observed flying at speeds of 50 km/h with a good tailwind behind them. They have also been observed at altitudes of over 9,000 feet (3 km) and they have also been seen flying over 500 km of open water.
