A drug that has survived since ancient Greece is able to reduce death rates from corona by 50%

Comprehensive medical research reveals that an old drug called "Colchicine" improves the treatment of severe corona disease and may even cut the mortality rate in half. "This is a particularly surprising result, because it is an ancient and well-known drug in the treatment of completely different inflammatory diseases."

Colchicine is an ancient medicine that comes from the yarrow plant, which was already known in ancient times for its special healing properties and is one of the few medicines that has survived to modern times. A new study, recently published in the European Journal of Internal Medicine led by Prof. Amichai Shatner from the Faculty of Medicine at the Hebrew University and the Hadassah Medical Center, analyzes all patients treated in controlled trials and reveals that the ancient drug with its special history is also effective in treating severe corona disease.

While in the past colchicine was used to treat and prevent attacks of gout ("gout") only, a fifty-year-old discovery confirmed by studies at Tel Hashomer and the Hadassah Medical Center proved that colchicine is also very effective against an inflammatory disease based on heredity, known as Mediterranean fever (FMF). This disease is relatively common among Jewish families from North Africa as well as Turks, Armenians and Arabs. Colchicine is very effective not only against the acute attacks and their prevention, but also in protecting against a serious complication of the disease - amyloidosis, which damages the kidneys. In recent years, large and controlled studies of colchicine against a dummy drug (placebo) have been conducted and its effectiveness has been proven in a series of common diseases, so much so that it has been put on the list of the 200 most prescribed drugs in the US today.

The initial mention of colchicine was discovered in an ancient Egyptian papyrus dated to 1550 BC, before the Israelites left Egypt, and later the drug was used by doctors in ancient Greece, during the Byzantine period, and by Arab doctors more than a thousand years ago. According to Prof. Shatner, "This is an anti-inflammatory drug that was accepted for the prevention and treatment of gout - a hereditary metabolic disease that causes attacks of inflammation due to the deposition of increased uric acid crystals in the joints and kidneys."

"Recently, I conducted a review of the proven uses of colchicine in quality studies from the last twenty years. The current study brings up three new and established uses for this drug - including treatment of the corona virus," explains Prof. Shatner. The three main uses examined in the study reveal an impressive effectiveness of colchicine, in addition to the fact that it is an inexpensive drug, generally well tolerated and has a high safety profile and impressive effectiveness. In long-standing and established studies, in which the part of Prof. Yehuda Adler from Israel stands out, it was found that in combination with a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, colchicine is very effective in the treatment of pericarditis and in preventing recurrences that can lead to severe morbidity. Similarly, the treatment is also effective in the prevention and treatment of the syndrome of autoimmune inflammation of the membranes of the heart and lungs that often appears after myocardial infarction, open heart surgery, and possibly also after catheterization to treat blockages in the heart arteries, to prevent atrial fibrillation attacks ("ablation") or to insert pacemaker.

Another use of colchicine is even more fascinating. As we know, patients who have had a heart attack are at a significantly increased risk of a repeat event and stroke, and this is a very large number of patients. Studies from recent years have found that, thanks to its anti-inflammatory activity on the hardened plaques in the arteries, colchicine in small daily doses is able to effectively protect these patients. The level of protection was up to the prevention of about half of the recurrent events, and this impressive beneficial effect was also achieved in patients who had already undergone therapeutic catheterization and were taking optimal preventive treatment with aspirin and statins.

"This is important news for a very large number of patients. Thanks to the drug, both heart attacks and strokes were avoided and it was well tolerated by most patients. Only about one in 10 had to stop the drug, mostly because of a mild side effect of diarrhea. We are currently awaiting the results of additional studies in atherosclerosis patients and we hope that they will confirm the positive trend", Prof. Shatner emphasizes. As for the global corona epidemic, so far four controlled studies have been published that examined the effect of colchicine supplementation in almost 6,000 corona patients. It was found that patients who received colchicine showed a significant improvement in the indicators of severe corona, and most importantly - there was a decrease in mortality by approximately 50% compared to those who were not treated with colchicine. Prof. Shatner concludes that "thanks to its cheap price and the safety of its use, the effectiveness of colchicine in the treatment of Corona is in terms of an important discovery that can contribute significantly to improving the morbidity and mortality of many patients, if it is confirmed in further studies. The result is particularly surprising, because it is such an ancient and apparently well-known drug, that new uses are being discovered for it, and it is possible that future studies will establish its usefulness in additional situations."

  1. Similar to aspirin, which was also produced from the willow plant in ancient Greece, and each time new abilities are discovered in the drug, also in colchicine, which has been known since ancient times and new abilities are discovered in it, it is worth starting to re-investigate ancient medicines, it turns out that the ancients had no less medical knowledge than today. It is a fact that today researchers all over the world medicinal plants that were once referred to as idol medicines. And the shamans of those cultures have extensive knowledge. But unfortunately they are disappearing.

  2. Dr. Zelenko has been talking about it for two years, in total you didn't want to talk about it because it was important that the money flow to the pharmaceutical companies!
