Yeshi Kfar Saba Center won first place this week (Tuesday 8.6.21) in the finals of the 4th Ramon Space Olympiad for middle schools in Israel. This year, due to the restrictions of the Corona, the final stage was held, in an online format.

The satellite designed by the Yishai Center is designed to provide comprehensive information to researchers about dust and sand storms around the world with the aim of studying their properties, understanding how they form and deepening the study of their influence on climatic and biological phenomena on Earth. With the help of the information that will be collected, it will be possible to create models that can provide an accurate forecast of the location of the storms and their movement. In the future, the same satellite will be used to study dust storms on Mars.

203 schools started the national Olympics and over 4000 male and female students participated in the various competitions during the year. 29 schools reached the semi-final stage and 11 of them qualified for the grand final stage held today. This year the Olympiad was marked by "civic science" in which the students were asked Plan a satellite mission to monitor an environmental, social, or military event. As part of the mission, they had to define the social, scientific, or other technological goals of the mission, characterize the dedicated payload with which the mission will be carried out, and prepare a three-dimensional digital model. During the competition, the students were accompanied by mentors from the Aerospace Industry, Alup, Acubit, ImageSat Intel, Rafael, the Hebrew University and Tel Aviv University who helped them plan the mission.

The Space Olympics is being held at the initiative and funding of the Israel Space Agency in the Ministry of Science and Technology, in cooperation with the supervision of science and technology teaching in the Science Division A in the Pedagogical Secretariat of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology. The competition is managed and carried out by the Israeli Center for Excellence in Education.

During this year's Olympics, the students participated in five stages in which they faced online quizzes, were required to answer complex riddles, hold an activity in the community whose purpose is to promote awareness of the issue of space, work together in a group, carry out classroom experiments and plan a satellite mission to monitor an environmental, social, or military event. The models presented a significant and creative learning process, group cooperation, innovative thinking and the ability to achieve impressive results in a short time.
