Israel reached achievements in the Physics Olympiad

The students who participated in the Olympiad won2 silver medals, 2 bronze and 1 silver medal

The International Distributed Physics Olympiad (IdPhO), was held online this week led by Russia, after being postponed from the summer due to the Corona virus. 211 young women and men from 45 countries around the world participated in the Olympics.

All members of the Israeli physics team, trained at the Husidman Center at Ben Gurion University of the Negev, achieved achievements: 2 silver medals, 2 bronze and 1 commendation.

The members of the team who represented the State of Israel with honor:

  •      Almog Veld, from Ahad Ha'am High School in Petah Tikva - won a silver medal
  •      Lior Bar Hillel, from Maccabim Reot Mor High School in Maccabim Reot - won a silver medal
  •     Uri Schwirtz, from the Hebrew Reali in Haifa - won a bronze medal
    •   Sagi Nehushtan, from Nopi Hashour High School in Kibbutz Magen - won a bronze medal
  •     Nega Keren, from Laubek High School in Haifa - won a commendation

The Ministry of Education and the Center for Future Scientists of the Maimonides Foundation lead the training of students to participate in the various Olympics as part of a joint venture. The team of students who participated in the online international physics olympiad were trained at the Husidman Center for science-seeking youth at Ben Gurion University of the Negev, led by Prof. Oleg Krichevski, the team's academic director, Eyal Wallach, the team leader, and Han Mechel, the team's instructor.

Minister of Education, Yoav Galant: "Towards the end of the Hanukkah holiday, we were informed of an achievement that is another reason to rejoice in the holiday. The medals and the commendation awarded to the members of the Israeli team at the International Physics Olympiad are a source of great pride for all of us - the result of prolonged effort, accompaniment and preparation that yielded sweet fruits.

Almog, Lior, Uri, Sagi, and Nega - thanks to your knowledge and determination, Israel won an honorable and impressive representation. We will continue to stand by you and by the side of good and talented people like you in order to ensure that Israel will continue to stand at the forefront of international science.'

The victory of our students in the Physics Olympiad joins the achievements of our other students in the Mathematics Olympiad. Together they place Israel at the forefront of the leading countries. These have a central and significant part in winning. I also congratulate the professional team that accompanied the contestants and trained them in a manner worthy of all appreciation."
