The recipient of the 2015 Israel Prize in the field of engineering research and engineering sciences is Prof. Yunina Elder From the Department of Computer Science and Applied Mathematics at the Weizmann Institute of Science – this was announced by Minister of Education Yoav Kish on behalf of the award committee headed by Prof. Arnon Benatur and with the participation of members Prof. Yael Idan and Prof. Ami Moyal. The award will be presented to Prof. Eldar at the traditional ceremony on the upcoming Independence Day.

"A world-renowned pioneering scientist in the field of signal and information processing," the Ministry of Education said in a statement about Prof. Eldar. "Prof. Eldar's main research area is the development of algorithms for signal and information processing and artificial intelligence. In recent years, she has focused on efficient sampling methods, signal processing and optimization in communication systems, radar and medical imaging, artificial intelligence, signal processing for optics, and computational biology. She challenged the classic 'sampling theorem' and developed innovative theories that allow for reducing sampling rates without losing information - an insight that has changed the way many systems in the field of engineering are designed," the statement added.

Among the reasons the award committee gave for choosing her were her social contribution: "Prof. Eldar is active in advancing Israeli society and equal opportunities in academia - including in advancing women and people with physical and mental disabilities. Prof. Eldar is an example and role model of a scientist who combines groundbreaking research with the ability to implement and have a broad social impact in all sectors of society."

Prof. Eldar joined the institute in 2019 as a full professor, having previously been a faculty member at the Technion in Haifa. She was born in Toronto and immigrated to Israel at the age of six. She holds two bachelor’s degrees from Tel Aviv University – in physics and electrical engineering, and a doctorate in electrical engineering and computer science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Prof. Eldar publishes frequently, and throughout her career she has received numerous awards and recognitions for academic and scientific excellence, including the 2023 Landau Prize for Arts and Sciences in the field of mathematics research. In 2012, she was elected to serve on the Council for Higher Education, and in 2017, she was accepted into the ranks of the Israel National Academy of Sciences.
