The 2009 Weizmann Prize for research in exact sciences will be awarded to Prof. Shlomo Havlin from the Physics Department at the University of Israel, and to Prof. Zvi Maza from the School of Physics and Astronomy at Tel Aviv University.
The committee decided to award the prize to Prof. Shlomo Havlin for his unique contribution to understanding dynamics in disordered systems and complex networks, and for developing models for calibration phenomena in nature, and to Prof. Zvi Maza for his important and groundbreaking contributions in the field of searching for planets near distant stars, and for leading this important field of astronomy in Israel. The members of the committee, headed by Prof. Yosef Klifter, included Prof. Doron Lantz and Prof. Hagai Netzer.
The prize, in the amount of NIS 18,000, will be awarded to the winners in a festive ceremony that will take place on December 10, 2009, in the presence of Tel Aviv-Jaffa Mayor Ron Huldai, with the participation of the jury, the prize winners and the prize winners from previous years.
The Municipality of Tel Aviv-Jaffa presents the award for Dr. Chaim Weizman, President of the World Zionist Organization and the first President of the State of Israel, from 1943, to mark the 70th anniversary of his birth. The award is intended to encourage and energize researchers in the exact sciences who live and work in the State of Israel.
