The north pole of Enceladus

Water vapor and mineral particles drift into space from the surface of the moon Enceladus, one of the icy moons orbiting Saturn. Metamorphoses hint at the existence of an ocean beneath the ice and the fascinating possibility that it contains life. Artist rendering: NASA / David Seal.

Is there life on one of Saturn's icy moons?

Saturn's moon Enceladus. At the bottom of the picture is its south pole with the tiger stripes from which the water jets come out, arising from an ocean of liquid water hiding under an outer layer of ice. The new study indicates that this ice layer is much thinner than previously thought in the South Pole region, which could greatly aid a future research mission to the Moon. Enceladus' sub-ice ocean may be very close to the surface
