: Nucleon pairs in atomic nuclei. Researchers have shown that protons and neutrons form close pairs in atomic nuclei and move faster than unpaired nucleons. In the nuclei of heavy atoms, in which there are more neutrons than protons, the percentage of protons that are in pairs, and therefore move fast, is greater than the percentage of neutrons
