the core of a planet

Mercury as photographed and mapped by the MESSENGER spacecraft

Mercury was much more magnetized: the ancient field was 50–100 times stronger

3D models indicate that about 3.7 billion years ago, a much stronger dynamo operated on Mercury than today. The finding narrows down possible explanations for the origin of the ancient field and indicates intense convection in the core.
