Progress on Russia's bid to save humanity from an asteroid strike. Russia may begin building a missile capable of destroying an asteroid threatening Earth. This is what the director of the Energy Missile and Space Company said on Friday.

"Three large asteroids, including Apophis, whose orbits cross the Earth's orbit and can hit the Earth in the coming decades," said Vitaliy Lopota in an interview with the Rossiya Gazeta newspaper.

This announcement must be taken with caution, because it is the manager of the missile manufacturer Energia, who of course has an interest in building the missile, and not necessarily the position of the authorities who will need it.

According to him, to change the orbit of a small planetary body the size of Apophis, it takes a 70-ton rocket to drag the asteroid away from the path that brings it to Earth with a nuclear explosion.
Apophis was discovered in 2004. It will reach the Earth and approach a distance of 30 thousand kilometers, less than a tenth of the distance to the Moon, and even slightly less than the orbit of the communication satellites, in 2029.
The experts estimate that if, God forbid, Apophis hits the Earth, the force of the collision will reach 1,700 megatons.
As of today, the chance of this is very small, even though it is the largest asteroid passing so close to the Earth in the last decades since tracking began.

According to Lopota, the existing Russian missiles with RD-171 engines can be redesigned and become a missile capable of destroying an asteroid. Energy will be ready today to build such a missile in 5-7 years," he said.

As of today, these engines are used by the Zenit-3SL missile in the Sea Launch project shared by Russia, Ukraine, Norway and the USA. "We call them the 'Tsar Engines', which no country has like, and compare it to the Tsar Cannon and the Tsar Bell, which were the largest in the world at the time.

  1. There is nothing to worry about Gidi's words. These refer to some imaginary thing called Apophis, this is in contrast to the actual asteroid whose name is Apophis.

  2. The shocking thing is that it "doesn't pay" to invest in the protection of the entire human race and large parts of the KDHA bio-count, but it does pay to accumulate money for the next 5 years. This just shows how much we are really worth...

  3. And I thought to Tommy that the idea of blowing up an asteroid is as old as the idea that there are aliens on Mars.

Since when do you seriously think about exploding an asteroid as protection against a collision??

  4. The issue of Near Earth Object is a well-known and researched issue and today nothing is actually done to deal with it, except for the project of scanning asteroids over 50 meters in diameter.

During my studies at the Technion, Dr. Moshe Weiler taught us an article dealing with the subject called "Risk Management Applied to Planetary Defense", in which there is an analysis of the probabilities of such an object hitting the Earth according to its size. We built decision trees according to the probabilities, the expected damage and the large investment.

Our conclusion was that it is not worth investing in prevention, but only in detection, because the cost of prevention is so great that no government would agree to take it on.

The subject itself is fascinating because it is one of the major problems of project risk management - an event with almost zero probability but a catastrophic effect on the result. Literally infinity times zero. exciting!

  5. If such a declaration had come from the mouth of the US president, it would have been welcomed.
According to a Russian manufacturer, it is likely that this is a flower crow destined for Putin's ears, but if the private industry does not take the baton of such projects, I am afraid that NASA can no longer take them. It can bring prosperity to private industries if the mega project is managed wisely.
With such engines it is possible to lift a solar farm into space, turn the electricity into microwaves and transmit them from a focused point to the earth. Outside the atmosphere, it seems to me that the amount of radiation is many times higher, so the investment to establish a solar farm in space is worthwhile.
It's a shame that there is no western company or consortium that takes on such a vision or a journey to Mars. Need some reward on the way. For example, the right to settle on Mars, or the obligation of governments to buy electricity from it at a good price, or the right to mine minerals, or something that will reimburse the phenomenal cost.

  6. Wow Gidi,
Even from the most delusional people who believe in aliens visiting the earth, I have not heard anything so delusional...
are you sure you are real??? Or maybe how old are you?
So surely you now expect that if there is a chance that this asteroid will collide with the Earth, we will not act to stop it, because Gidi said that it is inhabited by intelligent beings...
You need to change the name from Gidi to Gihi...

  7. Once a month they send out some kind of statement to the international media about the moon landing, the Mars landing and more and more
During the time of the Soviet Empire, these statements also had some backing at the current stage, apparently there is none,
It seems more than they launch statements
The world media is eager to spread any such statement even though it probably has no coverage on the ground,
Perhaps this is due to the huge difference between humanity's ambitions in space and its current location
that he barely manages to even enter a peripheral orbit.
On the other hand, major achievements of humanity in the present, such as the International Space Station
Of course, they are accepted from those who are "boring"
Not challenging it reminds Apollo that after a few flights people didn't relate to it anymore,

  8. And what if the in-laws offered to blow us up because we were standing in their way????

There is intelligent life on Aposys that the government hides from us and wants to destroy so that when they pass by Earth we won't see them from here and we will understand the crazy fraud about extraterrestrials that the governments of the world are running against us.

You should know that in general Aposis is not an "asteroid" (a term they invented to mislead us all) but a type of advanced spacecraft that allows extraterrestrials to move freely in the space system and they will not harm us but only pass close so that we can see them.

  9. Sounds like a publicity stunt because the problem is not that simple. The question is not only what is the size of the asteroid, but also what is its density. It may be as dense as a rock, but it is also possible that it is as dense as ice or even sponge... In addition, the asteroid explosion can break it into several pieces and then a number of smaller asteroids will fall on Earth, instead of one big one, which is not necessarily better...

  10. "Three large asteroids, including Apophis, whose orbits cross the Earth's orbit and can hit the Earth in the coming decades," said Vitaliy Lopota in an interview with the Rossiya Gazeta newspaper.

Which 3 other asteroids are these?
