Comet 3I/ATLAS, discovered in early July, is only the third interstellar object to pass through the solar system. Scientists are tracking its motion and believe it is a rare opportunity to learn about planetary conditions in distant solar systems.
On July 1, 2025, a rare event was detected in the night sky. Astronomers using the ATLAS telescope in Chile spotted a celestial object with such an unusual trajectory that it quickly became clear that it was a guest from somewhere else entirely: a comet moving at breakneck speed and entering the solar system from the depths of interstellar space. Within days, the suspicion was confirmed, and the object was named , with the serial number “3I” indicating that it is only the third interstellar body in history to be recorded passing through the solar system.
The fact that it is an interstellar comet is determined primarily from its dynamic characteristics: 3I/ATLAS It is moving at about 68 kilometres per second relative to the Sun – a speed that exceeds the limit of what objects in the system can reach. In addition, its orbit is hyperbolic – meaning open – and indicates that it is not gravitationally bound to the Sun. “This object is coming at such a high speed that there is nothing in the solar system that could have caused it,” explained Professor Jonty Horner of the University of Southern Queensland. “Of the three interstellar objects we have seen so far, this is by far the fastest.”
Early observations made shortly after its discovery revealed that the object was not just a lump of ice and rock: it had floor – that is, a cloud of gas and dust ejected from its nucleus – and even a short tail, similar to regular comets seen in the night sky. In other words, it is an active comet. The Minor Planet Center (MPC) reported: “There are initial reports of cometary activity – with a weak rise and a short tail of about 3 arcseconds.” This was the milestone that allowed it to be classified as a comet rather than an asteroid.
But the truth is that alongside the formal classifications and definitions, the excitement around 3I/ATLAS It stems from a deeper fact: it is a messenger from another world. Comets, according to modern science, are primitive bodies that have retained their original composition since the days of the formation of solar systems. They are fragments of time, frozen. When an interstellar comet like ATLAS enters the solar system, it carries with it a living sample – no less – of planetary chemistry and evolution from another solar system. Perhaps one we have never seen before.
This time, unlike the previous cases – 'Oumuamua in 2017 and 2I/Borisov in 2019 – the discovery occurred relatively early. The comet was detected long before it approached the Sun, giving astronomers months to carefully follow it. Spectroscopic observations, analyses of its gas emissions, and comparisons with the composition of local comets are expected to shed light on the nature of its materials, and perhaps even reveal traces of complex organic molecules.
“The scientific potential of interstellar comets is enormous,” explained Dr. David Rankin of the Catalina Sky Survey team. “They are natural laboratories of another world, frozen in time, and when we have enough time to follow one of them – as we do now – it is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
Information on the comet's size is still limited, but estimates suggest a diameter of hundreds of meters to a few kilometers. According to the latest measurements, it has a very weak brightness – magnitude 18.8 – so that even at its closest approach to the Sun, in late October, it will not be visible to the naked eye. Unfortunately, at its peak, the comet will be on the other side of the Sun's orbit relative to Earth – so that it will not be possible to follow it even with amateur telescopes. The ones that will succeed are advanced robotic telescopes, such as those of the project Virtual Telescope, who have already broadcast live broadcasts of the comet online.
But the broader question, beyond this or that object, concerns the place of the solar system in cosmic space. The fact that in less than a decade three interstellar bodies have been identified suggests that the solar system is not a closed system but Cosmic traffic junctionA new era of discovery is on the horizon, especially with the launch of the Vera S. Rubin Observatory, which will allow the discovery of hundreds of thousands of small, faint objects each year. “If we’ve been able to identify three interstellar visitors in less than a decade,” Horner said, “then with the next-generation instruments we’ll be discovering several every year.”
3I/ATLAS Joining a short and distinguished list, it is not just “another” astronomical discovery. It is a poignant reminder that we live in a dynamic, non-isolated system, exposed to events and disturbances from sources beyond our Sun. The fact that some of these bodies – like ATLAS – show cometary activity similar to that of “local” comets suggests that processes of planet formation, ices, organic molecules, and pre-biological materials may not be as rare as we thought. They may be a galactic feature.
And so, even if we don't get to see it with our own eyes, 3I/ATLAS Shedding light on a larger journey – a journey of matter, of time, and of ancient cosmic memory. Every time such an object crosses the solar system, it doesn’t just pass by – it also tells a story. And the question that remains is: How many more stories like this are waiting to be heard?
