According to the statistics on the Nobel Prize website, 201 scientists won the Nobel Prize for Medicine between the years 1901 (the year the award began) and 2012. 38 of them won by themselves. Among the winners are ten women. The youngest winner, Frederick Bunting of the discoverer of insulin, was 32 years old when he won in 1923. The oldest was Peyton Ross who won the prize in 1966 at the age of 87. Overall the average age of researchers when receiving the prize was 57.
