The Michael Landau Science Lottery Prizes for 2004 will be awarded this year to five scientists in five categories. The prize, amounting to NIS 80,000 per scientist, will be awarded to each of the researchers in the following fields:

Exact sciences: in the field of computer science, will be awarded to Prof. Noga Alon from Tel Aviv University. From the judges' reasoning: "His research is characterized by great mathematical depth, and by finding surprising solutions that combine unconventional tools from different fields. His works defined new areas of research in which many of the best researchers in the field are currently engaged. Beyond the pure scientific value of his works, they also have many practical applications."

Social sciences: in the field of Israel's economy, will be awarded to Prof. Reuven Gronau from the Hebrew University. From the judges' reasoning: "His many and varied studies combined innovative theoretical developments together with in-depth empirical analyzes that were mostly based on Israeli data. The award is given for his professional involvement in areas related to public economics, supervision of monopolies, transportation and public infrastructure issues, for being an outstanding teacher, head of the Department of Economics At the Hebrew University, director of the Falk Institute and academic director of Caesarea Conferences.

Humanities: in the field of literary research it will be awarded to Prof. Avner Holtzman from Tel Aviv University. From the reasons of the judges: "A very knowledgeable researcher, with a clean mind and intellectual integrity, who in a relatively short period of time earned a place for him as one of the main researchers of the new Hebrew literature, and put together a research corpus that is unmatched in scope and depth."

Social sciences: in the field of educational research it will be awarded to Prof. Zamira Mebarech from Bar Ilan University. From the judges' reasoning: "Her works were published in leading journals in the world and influenced the teaching of mathematics in Israel. She served as one of the leading researchers of the Pisa study which had an impact on education policy in Israel, a rethinking of the teaching of literacy and mathematics in Israel."

Life sciences: in the field of biomedicine it will be awarded to Prof. Hermona Sorek from the Hebrew University. From the judges' reasoning: "Her main contribution is in the study of molecular biology and the function of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, a very important enzyme in the body. Because of her enormous contributions in the field of basic molecular biology and its application in modern medicine, the Landau Award judging committee believes that she is the most suitable to receive this award."
