Groups of students from the electronics major - the field of robotics at the "Mashgav" high school, in the Mashgav regional council in the heart of the Galilee, won the first three places in the firefighting robot competition - "Roboner 2006", which was held by the Ministry of Education, on Thursday, March 9.3.06, XNUMX in Kiryat Gat.

The team from Magev that won first place, shares it with a team from "Rabin" school in Kiryat Gat. The teams that won the first three places will go on to represent Israel in the international competition that will be held in Hartford, Connecticut, USA, this April. Last year, a team from Meshav School won first place in the national Ruboner competition and first place in the international competition in the USA.

As part of the Robotner competition, the students must build a small, independent robot that can locate a fire source (a candle) and extinguish it. Haim Dribin, a teacher from the electronics major, who coordinates the field of robotics at Meshgav, said that the robot begins to operate after it picks up the beeping of a smoke detector and then begins to move in an apartment-like maze, scanning the rooms, with obstacles in the way such as: ramps, carpets, furniture-like coils, mirrors and stairs. The robot locates the source of the fire (in this case a candle) and extinguishes it with Co2 gas. He added that the idea on which the robot is based can in principle also be suitable for a large robot.

Haim Dribin explained that the students demonstrated great knowledge, technological sophistication and a high degree of control over the various skills of planning, building, and programming the robot. Erez Kreisler, head of the Mashgav Regional Council, congratulated the winners and said he was proud of them. He pointed out that the extraordinary achievement indicates the level of investment of the students from Magev and the high level of studies in the electronics and mechatronics majors.
