Prof. Ellroy, the rector of the university for the past three years, is a historian specializing in the history of the Jewish people in modern times, former dean of the Faculty of Humanities, founder of the Roderman Program for American Jewish Studies. Prof. Ellroy is considered one of the world's leading researchers on Jewish immigration in modern times, and he has published six books on Jewish immigration at the beginning of the 20th century and many articles in leading journals in Israel. In 2002, he joined the Department of Israel Studies at the University of Haifa, headed the School of History, and in 2016 was elected Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, a position he held until 2020. During this period, the number of studies by the department's researchers increased significantly, and in the last year of his tenure, the faculty was ranked number one in Israel Among the humanities faculties in terms of the number of publications.
In 2014 he established the Ruderman Program for American Jewish Studies, the only master's program in Israel that focuses on the relationship between American Jewry and Israel.
