Captain Kirk - ninety-year-old William Shatner flew into space and broke the record for the oldest person in space

However, this is a flight that lasted just a few minutes in the second manned suborbital flight of the New Shepherd spacecraft of the Blue Origin company owned by Jeff Bezos

The triple space race between Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk and Richard Branson produced another record today. Bezos' Blue Origin successfully completed its second manned space flight aboard the New Shepard spacecraft on Wednesday, October 13, 2021. The flight involved four astronauts, Dr. Chris Buschwiesen, Glenn de Vries, Audrey Powers and the familiar William Shatner, Capt. Kirk, the commander of the Enterprise in the original version of the Star Trek series.

Industrialist Shatner breaks a record set by New Shepard's first manned flight on July 20, 2021, in which Ellie Funk, 82, was chosen by Bezos after she almost became an astronaut at the start of the space age, but ended up being selected for these missions (Mercury, c 'Mini and then Apollo - only male astronauts). William Shatner also had a role in encouraging the general public all over the world to go and study science, and to want to be astronauts one day. The Star Trek series, with all its shortcomings, was part of a peak era of space exploration - the moon landings, and the jubilee that passed until ordinary citizens (who have connections with billionaires) could fly.

The crew members were welcomed back from space and held a celebration in the West Texas desert with family, friends, and the Blue Origin team.

“At Blue Origin, we are driven by the dreamers who inspire us and builders who make those dreams a reality. Today's team represented both dreamers and builders. We had the honor of flying our very own Audrey Powers, New Shepard's Vice President of Operations, who fulfilled a lifelong dream to fly into space and was an integral part of building New Shepard. Both of our clients, Chris Buschwiesen and Glenn De Vries, have built their own successful ventures and are now realizing their dreams of space travel. And as everyone knows, William Shatner played an important role in describing and imagining the wonders of the universe and inspired many of us to pursue careers in the space industry," said Bob Smith, CEO of Blue Origin. "This flight was another step forward in flying astronauts safely and often. This is an amazing group and we are just getting started."

Blue Origin plans another manned flight this year, and several manned flights for 2022.

  1. I just happened to watch the live broadcast on CNN.
Really ridiculous hype. It seems to me that it takes more time to put on these clothes than the flight itself.
