Research: Humanity has doubled the risk of heat stress

British researchers have found that by 2040 the summers will be half as hot as the summer in 2003, which was the hottest in hundreds of years. One of the main reasons for the heat waves is the emission of gases that cause the greenhouse effect

Human activity has doubled the risk of heat waves on Earth, such as the one in 2003 in Europe, which killed thousands of people. This is what researchers found in an article published in the journal "Nature". The researchers calculated that by 2040, half of the summers will be as hot as the one in 2003. This was published today in the Washington Post.

The three British researchers, Peter A. Stott from the University of Reading, and D. A. Stone and Dr. Allen from the University of Oxford, used two computer models to estimate the likelihood that a summer like the summer of 2003 - which was the hottest in hundreds of years and 35 thousand people died of heat - would have occurred without the influence of humanity. The researchers concluded, with 90% certainty, that human activity has doubled, if not quadrupled, the chances that "a heat wave will reach this intensity".

The report is the first attempt to calculate the rate at which human activity has affected the chances of a certain climatic event occurring. The researchers did not point to a single cause of the heat wave in their study, but attributed it to a combination of gas emissions and natural temperature fluctuations.

Many environmental researchers claim that the government must curb emissions of gases that cause the greenhouse effect and change the climate, but some academics and senior officials in the US government say that these studies do not justify such a significant change in the economy.

"The research is so significant because this is the first time scientists have found human fingerprints on climate events, ones that can be prosecuted," says Annie Patsonk, an international consultant for environmental protection. She compared the research to finding the proof that tobacco causes cancer. "Investors will start looking for those responsible for global warming, who refuse to limit the amount of greenhouse gases emitted, and will sue them," she said.
