Prof. Emmanuel Hansky from the Department of Clinical Microbiology at the Faculty of Medicine at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem is one of 42 scientists from twenty countries who were selected to receive high research grants from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in the USA.
Nearly 500 scientists from 62 countries competed for the grants. The research grants will be awarded for a period of more than five years. The total amount is 17.5 million dollars, of which Prof. Hansky will receive a grant of 400 thousand dollars.
The Howard Hughes Institute focuses on research aimed at uncovering the secrets of molecular and genetic mechanisms, with an emphasis on infectious and parasitic diseases such as tuberculosis, malaria, viral hemorrhagic fevers and anthrax.
Prof. Hansky studies invasive strains of group A streptococcus that cause the predatory bacteria. His research will focus on identifying the causes of the virulence of bacteria and how to regulate them, with the aim of paving the way for better prevention and treatment of deadly diseases.
