The Cancer Society held (September 14.9.2005, 350) a seminar on updates on breast cancer and prostate cancer, in cooperation with the Association of Family Physicians, the Israel Association for Clinical Oncology and Radiotherapy, the Israel Association of Urologists, the Israel Association for Oncological Surgery, the Israel Prostate Cancer Foundation (Prostate Cancer Foundation Israel) and the Israel Society for breast diseases. Dr. Micha Barchana, Director of the National Cancer Registry at the Ministry of Health, stated at the seminar that: "Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men in Israel, every year about 2,000 new cases are discovered and about 380 men die from the disease. The causes of prostate cancer are age, Origin, family history that states that men whose father has cancer are twice as likely to get this cancer, as well as unhealthy diet, drinking Alcohol, smoking and obesity are suspected as possible factors, but more studies are needed to determine this. Dr. Micha Barhana added that "prostate cancer morbidity rates have been on the rise in the last decade and as the age increases from 45 and above, there is a trend of increasing the risk of getting it."

The prostate is an organ found only in men's bodies. It is a small gland, the size of a walnut. The main function of the prostate gland is the production of seminal fluid, which is a thick white fluid that mixes with the sperm produced in the testicles. The prostate also produces a protein called prostate antigen (PSA), which helps the fluid flow. The prostate gland surrounds the urethral tube (which carries the urine from the bladder to the penis) and is surrounded by a muscle layer and a fibrous sheath. Testosterone, the male sex hormone, produced in the testicles is responsible for the growth process and the operation of the prostate cells. Near the prostate there are groups of lymph nodes. These are small glands, about the size of a bean each, which are part of the lymphatic system (a network of glands, spread over the entire body). The lymph nodes are connected to each other by ducts, which circulate, with the help of the lymph fluid, cells that fight diseases. In the back of the prostate gland is the rectum. In the early stages of prostate cancer, it does not create symptoms and does not have any external signs. Symptoms appear when the tumor grows and puts pressure on the urethral tube. Since prostate cancer grows slowly, the onset of symptoms can occur years after the formation of the tumor itself. In many cases, men over the age of 50 suffer from benign enlargement of the prostate gland (BPH) resulting from non-cancerous causes. A benign (non-cancerous) enlargement of the prostate gland and a malignant tumor in the prostate gland have the same symptoms, including:
• Difficulty urinating.
• An increase in the frequency of urination, especially at night.
• Pain when urinating.
• Blood in the urine (rare).
• If the cancer has metastasized to the bones, bone pain will occur. Sometimes, the first symptoms the man will feel are muscle pains in the back, hips or pelvis.
Breast Cancer Israel 2005 - in the month of October, "Breast Cancer Awareness Month"
Breast cancer is the most common malignant disease in Israel and the Western world in general. According to the data of the Cancer Society, about 4,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year and about 900 die from the disease. One out of every eight women in Israel may get breast cancer, and the earlier the disease is diagnosed, the more likely it is to be cured to about 90%. From the data of the Cancer Society, it appears that the number of women who recover from breast cancer is steadily increasing thanks to early detection and thanks to the improvement of treatment methods and the widespread increase of awareness in Israel. As part of increasing awareness of the disease, every year in October, "Breast Cancer Awareness Month" is celebrated in Israel at the same time as the rest of the world. This month, the Association for the War of Cancer is organizing events to increase awareness of the issue and is holding a number of collaborations with bodies and companies in Israel. Also, the Association for the War of Cancer is embarking on a wide-ranging awareness campaign focusing on the importance of early detection and methods of breast cancer treatment. During the rest of the year, the Cancer Society works on a variety of initiatives, for example, the Cancer Society initiated the national program for the early detection of breast cancer, which is operated in cooperation with the Ministry of Health and the health insurance funds. The association purchased a mammography mobile to enable women living in remote communities to be examined. The association produces awareness campaigns to promote breast cancer awareness, takes care of improving the methods of treatment and rehabilitation of breast cancer patients, funds the establishment of breast health centers and dozens of standards for nurses and social workers to coordinate breast cancer treatment. The association also supports and promotes breast cancer research. The association founded "Yad - for recovery" an organization of women who have recovered from the disease who are given a supporting hand to women who have just fallen ill and prove that even in this fight it is possible to win.
