China has taken new steps to protect pandas, nearly doubling the area in the Qinling Mountains set aside for reserves and transit corridors for the animals between different protected areas. The area of reserves and transit corridors, which was about 1.5 million dunams, will now reach about 2.7 million dunams.

Pandas are in danger of extinction. Only a thousand animals in the wild, all in China. About a fifth of them live in the Qinling Mountains in Shaanxi Province in the center of the country. There, as in other areas, the expansion of human habitations has resulted in the interruption of the continuity of the pandas' habitats and has created isolated groups of pandas, sometimes dozens to one.

Such small groups are limited in their ability to reproduce and also their chances of extinction as a result of famine or larger natural disasters.
They know endangered animals
