An Israeli-German agreement to conduct an oxygen production experiment on the lunar soil was signed in Germany between the OHB company and the Israeli Helios company, which operates with the support of the Israel Space Agency. Helios is developing technology for the production of oxygen and metal from the sand of the moon and other planets to overcome one of the significant challenges in maintaining future colonies outside of Earth.

"Oxygen is one of the most significant and heavy components in space flight, over 60% of the rocket's weight at launch," says Jonathan Geifman, CEO of Helios. Close to half of the mass of the soil on the moon is made of oxygen that can be produced on the spot without the need to fly it from the earth and thus significantly reduce the costs of flying in the future and reduce the dependence on the delivery of raw materials from the earth. Success in producing oxygen on the moon is the key to human development outside of Earth and a dramatic reduction in the costs of space exploration."
The creation of the materials is done in a process of electrolysis which breaks down the minerals and oxides that make up the sand into iron oxide and silicon. Helios' technology, which it develops in its laboratories in Israel, has many applications also on earth in the production of iron and silicon in an environmentally friendly process that can reduce over 10% of all greenhouse gas emissions in the world.
"Establishing a permanent base on the moon requires broad international cooperation," says Brigadier General (Res.) Uri Oron, CEO of the Israel Space Agency. "The Helios company is an example of a company that will become a major global player in efforts to return to the moon. We welcome the tripartite collaboration between the two companies together with the aerospace industry, which expresses the strong technological ties between Israel and Germany and the ability of cross-border collaborations to bring about scientific breakthroughs."
Helios is an Israeli company that was established in 2018 with the support of the Israel Space Agency, the Ministry of Energy and the Innovation Authority.
