For the first time in the Times Higher Education Impact Index: the University of Haifa is ranked among the top 100 universities in the world, and the first among research universities in Israel, in the prestigious index, which examines the impact of academic institutions on social, economic and environmental sustainability.

In the Impact Index for 2024, Haifa University is ranked 95th overall among over 2000 universities worldwide, an increase from its ranking last year, when it was ranked in a cluster between 101-200 in the world.

Prof. Gur Elroy, Rector of the University of Haifa, who will assume his position as the University's President in October, said: "Our steady increase in the Impact Index, from 400th place in the world to 95th place in just three years, indicates the great importance and the hard work we have done at the University of Haifa to meet the important task of universities in the 21st century: to be an influential institution, which takes part in solving the great challenges of humanity in the 21st century. Our high position in the impact index is a source of pride for the entire Israeli academy, and is mainly evidence that we at the University of Haifa are not a 'tooth tower', these A beacon of values ​​that operates and influences Israeli society as a whole and the social and environmental fabric in the north of the country in particular."

The impact index of THE (Times Higher Education) ranks universities according to the 17 UN goals for sustainable development SDGs - Sustainable Development Goals; these are goals related to the great challenges of humanity, such as: fighting poverty and inequality, ensuring equal education, climate change and global warming , development and accessibility of new energies, preservation of biological diversity, etc. The score is determined by the impact the university has on each of these goals, and it includes the quality of the research, the study and teaching programs, the impact through public involvement and the internal conduct of the institution. The impact index describes the actual impact of the university on a series of issues of crucial importance that are at the top of the international agenda.

Among the SDG goals that were examined in the index, the University of Haifa presented particularly impressive data in promoting the following goals:
• Gender equality and fairness (SDG5): 17th place in the world.
• Peace, justice and the strength of institutions (SDG16): 32nd place in the world.
• Quality education (SDG4): 68th place in the world.
• Preserving life on earth (SDG15): 82nd place in the world.
• Labor relations and economic growth (SDG8): 91st place in the world.
• Fight against global hunger (SDG2): between 101-200 in the world.
• Reducing inequality (SDG10): between 101-200 in the world.

As mentioned, the University of Haifa has made a significant leap forward in each of the last three years: in the 2021 index, it was ranked in a cluster between 301-400 and every year since then it has jumped a whole cluster higher, until this year's achievement that put it in the first hundred for the first time. This year, 400 more universities joined the index, which indicates the growing understanding of its importance.
