In an epidemiological study published in Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association, it was found that babies born to malnourished women may have an increased risk of having a stroke in adulthood. The study was conducted in England and the USA, in both countries there are areas where the local population suffers a higher incidence of deaths as a result of stroke than the general population. In the USA these areas are in the southeast of the country and in England these areas are concentrated in northern towns as well as in the poor rural areas. These differences are not explained by differences in the adult lifestyle. Residents of these areas also suffer from a higher incidence of heart disease and blood pressure.

The researchers analyzed information from previous studies that examined the distribution of stroke cases in England between 1968 and 1978. In order to assess the health status of the mothers, the mortality rate of mothers and newly born babies was examined, in a period 50 years before, between the years 1911-1925, when the stroke patients were born.
It was found that in areas where there was a high incidence of stroke mortality in 1968-1978, there was indeed a high incidence of infant and maternal mortality. Mothers in these regions were poorer, sicker, suffered from poor nutrition and their babies were born underweight. Today, there are no such differences between these areas in England and the rest of the country. In addition, it was found that children born in these areas had an increased risk of stroke, even if they grew up in other areas.

The researchers think that the geographic differences in the incidence of death from stroke in the US are due to the same reason, since malnutrition was common in the southeastern states of the US in the period between the Civil War and the Great Depression.

The hypothesis of the researchers is that one of the sources of heart diseases is malnutrition during the fetal and childhood stages, which causes physical changes that later lead to the development of the disease.
