The immune system of volunteers who were injected with a segment of malaria DNA and then vaccinated again with a virus containing a different segment of the malaria DNA, produced a sufficient amount of T cells to fight the disease. This is a big step towards the development of a vaccine to treat and prevent the disease of malaria. This is reported by an article To be published in Nature Medicine June 2003.
Now more experiments are being conducted in Africa where about 3000 children die a day as a result of malaria.
If it is proven that this type of vaccine is effective in treating malaria, there is hope that a similar vaccine will be effective in treating diseases such as AIDS, tuberculosis and even cancer.
