Scientists from the School of Medicine of the University of Frankfurt found that the substance extracted from the roots of the anise plant inhibits the replication of the SARS virus in monkey cells in vitro. It was found that in high concentrations of the substance, called glycyrrhizin, the replication of the virus is stopped and its penetration into new cells is prevented. The substance glycyrrhizin is known as an antiviral substance and is used in the treatment of hepatitis C and the AIDS virus. In a study they compared different antiviral agents and found that glycyrrhizin is more effective in inhibiting the SARS virus than the drug used these days, ribavirin. It is not clear whether it will be possible to treat SARS patients with glycyrrhizin since a large amount of the substance is needed for the treatment to be effective, but it is possible to find similar substances, more effective
