The heads of the research universities in Israel: This is a difficult and sad day for all of us, a day we feared for a long time

"The constitutional coup that the government of Israel is dragging the country into will be a disaster for the academy as well! We call from here on the lawmakers in the Knesset - do not reach out to damage the democratic foundations of the State of Israel! You must create a broad consensus on questions essential to the nature of the regime in Israel!"

The Board of Heads of Research Universities in Israel (RA) issued the following announcement today (23/7/23) at 14:30 p.m.:
"We, presidents, rectors, CEOs, vice presidents and deans of faculties from Israel's research universities, are standing here next to the Knesset of Israel, on the day when the debate begins on the second-third reading of the bill to reduce the probable cause."

"This is a difficult and sad day for all of us, a day we feared for a long time. Now we are anxious about the consequences of this legislation and those that follow it on the Israeli academy. International research bodies have already announced a re-examination of academic ties with institutions in Israel, we are witnessing a decrease in the arrival of researchers from abroad" For conferences and research in Israel, the brain drain has already begun, and this is only the beginning."

"The constitutional coup that the government of Israel is dragging the country into will be a disaster for the academy as well! We call on the legislators in the Knesset - do not reach out to damage the democratic foundations of the State of Israel! Stop before it is too late! You must create a broad consensus on essential questions about the nature of the regime in Israel!

Yesterday (Saturday) the heads of the Weizmann Institute published the following message:

Dear Weizmann Institute community,

"We, the members of the board of the Weizmann Institute of Science, are proud that the Weizmann Institute of Science is a partner in the establishment and establishment of a free, democratic and independent state, on the foundations of freedom, justice and peace. This is the infrastructure designed to ensure the future of the people in the country, and on which we continue to maintain a legacy of innovative science , challenging conventions and breaking barriers."

"We will join many of our friends in academic institutions in the country in standing firm and upright in the face of legislative moves that may rob Israeli society of the freedoms that, among other things, allow it to stand at the cutting edge of science. Without democracy there is no academia, and we will not stand by while Israeli democracy is under attack."

"It is clear to us that the institute's community is made up of a mosaic of opinions, backgrounds and cultures. We will travel to Jerusalem tomorrow to work for Israel to continue to be a place where different opinions can be heard."

"Every day it becomes clearer that the threat to Israeli democracy is real, and we are anxious about the attempt to bite into the individual freedoms, the human rights of all of us, and the Zionist nature of the state, in the spirit of the Declaration of Independence. We must not bow down to the forces that threaten to weaken the foundations on which the state was founded and for which we fought on countless fronts ."

The announcement is signed by Prof. Alon Chen, President of the Weizmann Institute, Prof. Ziv Reich, Vice President, Prof. Roi Ozer, Vice President for Resource Development and Communications, Prof. Irit Sagi, Vice President for Innovation and Technological Applications and Prof. Alon Harmlin, Vice President for Administration and Finance.

  1. Hello my father
First of all, I say that I read from time to time, write yours.

But I didn't like this article. It is true that you should report the words of the university president even though they are political, but you should remember that nature has two sides and since you are not a lawyer
And not every one of the speakers should have mentioned only the hundreds of professors who think differently.

In addition, Israel has never been a democracy
Not in the days of Ben-Gurion and not today.
To this day, Israel has not freed itself from Mapai rule.
In addition, there is no real academic freedom in Israel. And that almost all academia, with an emphasis on grass science, thinks the same
There's probably a lot more to the point than to the point.
The universities all have academic freedom on one side and are completely political.
Those who don't think on the right side are excluded and in most cases enter a closet where they will be swallowed up.

If the presidents think we are in a dictatorship they will put the keys and go home.
We may lose a few years, but the result will be excellent for a few more years. Because finally there might be a non-political academy

  2. The best universities in China are the technologies both because it does not contradict ideologies and because it allows them to produce weapons. Like Iran. It is impossible to compare the situation today with the situation 200 years ago, it is a fact that science has flown since then. By the way, the only place where there was democracy for a long time was Britain, so it is no wonder that the universities there flourished before the focus shifted to the USA after World War II. The reason why science in England has weakened is because of Thatcher's policy which saw all public money as an expense and not an investment.

  3. So Cambridge and Oxford are not universities, and so are all educational institutions before democracy. Only because Newton did not study in a democratic regime, he was the greatest physicist in history, and of course Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo are not artists because they did not live in a democracy. In China, Russia and others there is no academy, therefore the institutions Higher education established branches in China.

  4. With one difference, here it is explicitly a retreat and not a step forward as in the case of the earth's orbit around the sun.

  5. "Vara's activity is part of the site's reporting area. It only outrages those who want to live in a dictatorship."
What impudence! No one told you not to report. But your report is very biased. The blackened letters. the title….

Here, I'll correct you: once again, the Rabbis prove that there is no place for pluralism in the academy. That pluralism is an empty slogan. And democracy according to them should only serve the children of the gods.

  6. Vatican leaders: This is a difficult and sad day for all of us, a day we have feared for a long time.
"We, the Pope, the Hashemites, bishops, vice-bishops and archhigemons of the Holy Catholic Church, are standing here next to St. Peter's Church, on the day when the discussion about the earth's orbit around the sun begins.
This is a difficult and sad day for all of us, a day we feared for a long time. Now we are worried about the consequences of the heliocentric model and other models for describing the universe on the Holy Catholic Church. Other churches have already announced a re-examination of the theological ties with the Catholic Church. We are witnessing a decrease in the arrival of priests from across the continent to conferences and to astronomical research in Vatican City. The brain drain has already begun, and this is only the beginning."

  7. Israeli academia and democracy. Great joke. Like water and oil. Blessed is the idiot who believes. Clear the chairs and also the yoke of the fat salary. I promise you that more deserving people will enter the position

  8. There is no academy with one opinion. That is why the academy in Israel ranks one hundred or less in the world.

  9. why are you sad ? The dictatorship in Getz Mertz abolishes laws. Without supervision, without appeal, this is a democratic distortion that will be corrected today. Universities should be open-minded and condemn the Beget dictatorship

  10. This picture is worth a thousand words. The time has come for refreshment and new growth that is healthier and less narrow-minded and narrow-minded. It is already clear that the academy needs more diversity of opinion at the top.

  11. Academia in Israel has long since ceased to be a democracy or even a tolerant dictatorship. The academy in Israel is hypocrisy and dictatorship, gagging and persecuting the right.

  12. It is unfortunate that the scientist also chose to involve politics with science, in the context of reporting on the outrageous activities of R. A. Peace be upon you.

  13. The most important thing is that the head of the Technion flew to China, the most democratic country in the world and without an academy. The left fell on its head.
