A device that generates electricity from human blood may soon turn us into "human batteries." At least that's what researchers in Japan claim, who are developing a method to "draw" electrical power from the glucose in the blood, in a way that mimics the way the human body produces energy from food.

It was reported on the "Annova" website that, theoretically, the new method can "draw" from each person 100 watts - an amount sufficient to light an electric bulb. However, in order to reach such an amount, all the food consumed by a person would have to be converted - into electrical power. This is problematic, considering that The human body needs to use the food for other needs as well.

The scientists claim that the new electric generator could also be useful among robots that need sugar. The group of researchers, from Panasonic's "nanotechnology" laboratories in Kyoto, have so far managed to produce only a small amount of electricity. However, they expect to increase the output as the experiment progresses.

Dr. Kezo Adda, head of the research team, said that "it's like the metabolism of food. The human body is able to process glucose and produce energy. When the glucose is oxidized, electrons are produced." According to him, the next development the scientists are working on is human "fuel cells".
