The American Museum of Natural History, located in New York, offers starting today a one-of-a-kind experience: a journey through a XNUMXD virtual universe created by supercomputers, based on the most advanced sky maps. The virtual universe extends from Orion to the edge of the limits known to science, and the shows are conducted by two presenters - one of them equipped with a ball for XNUMXD navigation and the other with a computer that displays accompanying graphics. The shows are based on the Hayden Planetarium's digital galaxy project, in which many millions of dollars have been invested - partly by NASA.

The program currently includes three journeys: the first in the vicinity of the solar system, the second will focus on the structure of our galaxy and the third will clarify our place in the universe. These journeys will also allow the general public to enjoy a privilege that until now was reserved only for astrophysicists and their students - a real-time interactive tour of the entire universe known to man. The journeys are so tangible that one of the participants complained of "space sickness", the weight of seasickness - and the lecturer had to remind him that he was not really moving in space.

The system is based on broadband networks, such as Internet 2, and fast chips that process data received from telescopes and satellites that constantly update the maps of the universe. The display is constantly updated according to the changes that actually occur in space, and also accurately illustrates the size relationships between the stars and galaxies.

PC and laptop users can view the virtual universe stereoscopically, using a special software called Partiview, which can be downloaded from the Hayden Planetarium website.
