Scientists have discovered that there may be a connection between the virus that "hijacks" part of the human genetic code, and the disease of schizophrenia. According to the scientists, the hidden virus - which did not penetrate the cells - managed to invade the human DNA millions of years ago and was inherited from generation to generation. Experts believe that some of the activities of the dormant virus in DNA have unknown effects on brain function, in a way that contributes to the increase in the number of schizophrenia cases.
In a study conducted by a team from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, experimenters who were diagnosed with schizophrenia and healthy volunteers were tested, in an attempt to locate the hidden virus in DNA. A particularly high level of signs indicating the existence of the latent virus, compared to a very low level of signs found in combat the other subjects
in research.
Despite the publication of the research findings, the researchers disagree and say that its results still do not provide a complete answer to the question of the history of schizophrenia.
Latent viruses - tiny invaders
Viruses, which are smaller than bacteria, are a kind of package of genetic material wrapped in a protein coat. There are viruses, such as the flu virus, that can invade human cells, multiply inside them and then break out and contaminate other cells.
Latent viruses, on the other hand, work in a different, more sophisticated way. They are built from genetic material called RNA, which can produce DNA that merges with the genetic information contained in the cell itself. In fact, this type of virus can instruct a cell to make more copies of itself that can burst out and infect other cells.
