Two years after doctors in China implanted a penis from a dead donor into a man for the first time, the surgeons had to remove the implant, due to psychological problems he developed. The world's first penile transplant was defined as a success, but his doctors found that his quality of life was severely damaged, and he suffered a mental crisis.
The patient, a 44-year-old resident of China, was seriously injured in an accident this year. The accident severely injured his penis, leaving a stump in place of his penis, a single centimeter long, through which he was unable to ejaculate or perform any sexual activity.
The doctors from the Guanzago Hospital labored for 15 hours in an operation in which a 10 cm long penis was implanted. The implant was donated by the mother of a 20-year-old young man who was in a state of brain death.
The surgery, which will be reported in the next issue of the European Journal of Urology, represents a significant leap forward in transplant surgeries. The operation required great skill in connecting blood vessels and tiny nerve fibers.
In the past, several surgeries were performed in which genitals that were torn from the body were reattached, but this was the first time that a penis was reattached from person to person. The doctors defined the operation as a real success. 10 days later, tests revealed that the blood supply to the organ was normal, and that the man was able to urinate normally.
However, despite the medical success, the doctors had to remove the implant two weeks later, due to serious psychological problems suffered by the patient and his wife. Tests later revealed that the penis had not suffered any damage from transplant rejection.
And meanwhile, at the other end of the spectrum, the condition of Isabelle Dinois - the first face transplant recipient from France, is getting better and better. The scars on her face are already less and less visible, and the muscles are getting stronger and improving their mobility. Her expressions also became fuller on the way to full recovery.
