A software system capable of producing natural language sentences by computer in response to graphic input was developed by Professor Dov Dori of the Technion, who headed a group of 20 researchers and students. This is the first and only development in the world that produces natural language by the computer, in response to a graphical model of a system that the user puts on the screen.
The innovative development inspires admiration in the world of computers. Professor Edward Crowley, Dean of the Faculty of Aeronautics at MIT University, defined it as "a breakthrough in the field of computers and systems analysis, which can be paralleled to the cracking of the human genome in the field of biology."
The developed system has a business potential of millions of dollars, since it shortens by at least fifty percent the procedures of developing systems in a wide variety of fields. "The client, who is not an expert in information systems but an expert in his field of work, can now sit down with the development team and respond immediately to the characterization in its creation, as he reads on the screen in human language what the planned system will do," explained Professor Dori. "We have, in fact, created a language of communication between the system architect and the customer. Until now, the customer had to wait patiently for the development results, make his comments and wait a long time for the corrections. Using the developed software, he can respond to the design details in real time, thus shortening the development time of the system and raise its quality significantly."
The new method, already taught at the Technion and MIT, constitutes a revolution in the field of system development, as it offers the world a simple and friendly alternative to the existing standard in software system development.
The development of Professor Dori and his team lasted about six years and appeared these days in a broadsheet book, published by SPRINGER. Professor Dori is a faculty member in the field of information systems engineering in the Faculty of Industry and Management at the Technion, and he wrote his book in 1999-2001, when he was on sabbatical at MIT.
