The first bill to ban human cloning in the US was presented this week to the American Congress. Republican congressmen are behind the legislative initiative, who believe that human cloning is morally unjustified and medically unhealthy.

The bill prohibits the cloning of humans completely and presents a series of severe penalties for those who attempt to do so - ten years in prison, or a fine of one million dollars. Although there is no guarantee that the bill will be put to a vote, its initiators believe that the time has come to begin the political struggle against the technique, which they regard as distasteful.

Congressman Dave Weldon says that the attempted cloning of sheep caused the creation of many serious birth defects, and that under the existing ethical conditions the concept of cloning an individual human is fundamentally flawed. According to Weldon, you can put up with deformities when it comes to patches, but not when it comes to human children.

"Who wants to be cloned? - that's the real question we have to ask," says Weldon, "I think most of us want to be proud of ourselves, knowing that each of us is an individual person, a unique being. Would you like to be considered just a 'carbon paper' copy, instilling his qualities Inherited?".

Human cloning has already been outlawed in five of the US states. It is estimated that it will be months or even years before such a ban is discussed at a nationwide level in Congress, but the principled opposition to cloning is certainly gaining momentum.
