Australian scientists claim that the cooling of the upper atmosphere caused the hole to expand; Clouds in this layer make the CFC's in human use destructive to the ozone
Scientists in Australia claim that the hole in the ozone layer over Antarctica is expanding at a rate that may lead to a record level this year. The research conducted by the scientists states that the growth in the hole results from the cooling of the temperature in the upper layer of the atmosphere (stratosphere) - the place where it was created.
"The current growth rate is the same as it was in 2000 - when an all-time record was broken," said scientist Andrew Kleckwick. The ozone is a layer in the atmosphere that protects the earth from the sun's rays, especially the "Ultra Vi" rays, which cause skin cancer and cataracts.
In 2000, the American space agency, NASA, announced that the hole had expanded to a world record of 23.8 million square kilometers - three times the size of Australia and the USA. The hole currently covers the entire South Pole region.
AdvertisementAccording to the scientists, the first signs of the cooling of the stratosphere were observed about six weeks before the planned date. Clouds found in this layer create chemical reactions that convert chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) into ozone-depleting substances. CFC is found in human use in air fresheners, deodorants and air conditioners.
According to the scientists, "In 2000 we didn't see these clouds until the beginning of July. This year we saw them in mid-May. This is the earliest period in which they are observed." Only in October will the extent of the expansion of the hole be revealed, with the rise in temperatures in the area.
