Now the scientists analyzing data from NASA's Cassini mission are taking the proof of existence one step further: they have found strong confirmation of hydrogen cyanide, an important molecule in the origin of life.
The researchers also discovered evidence that the ocean, which hides beneath the moon's outer ice mantle and feeds the thymara, has a powerful source of chemical energy. The source of the energy, which has not been identified until now, is some organic compounds, some of which, on Earth, are used as fuel for organisms.
The findings, published on December 14 in Nature Astronomy, suggest that this small moon may have much more chemical energy than previously thought. The more energy there is, the more likely life can develop and exist.
"Our study provides further evidence that eucalypts contain some of the most important molecules for creating the building blocks of life and sustaining that life through metabolic reactions," said lead author Jonah Peters, a doctoral student at Harvard University who performed much of the research while working at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. In addition to the fact that Enceladus meets the basic requirements of a population, we now have an idea of how complex biomolecules can form there, and what kind of chemical pathways can be involved."
"The discovery of hydrogen cyanide was particularly exciting because it is the starting point for most theories about the origin of life," Peter said.
