A reporter for the BBC website in Jerusalem interviewed Ramon and asked him about keeping Shabbat and kashrut in space

The BBC is interested in the first Israeli astronaut, Ilan Ramon, who is about to take off aboard the space shuttle Columbia on January 16.
The correspondent of the BBC's website in Jerusalem, Ari Ben Goldberg interviewed Ramon during a visit to his homeland and asked him what it was like to be a representative of the Jewish people, about keeping Shabbat and kashrut in space. Goldberg also presented on the site the picture painted by the boy Peter Gantz who died in Triesenstadt and which depicts a lunar landscape.
As for the issue of observing Shabbat in space, when the spacecraft actually orbits the Earth once every ninety minutes and in fact every day had to mark a Shabbat that is 90 minutes long. Well, according to the halachic ruling of Rabbi Zvi Konikov, who is in charge of the space center in Cape Canaveral, Florida, he must observe Shabbat according to the times of its entry and exit at the space port from which it departed.
