"Artificial intelligence enters fields such as literature and law." Says Prof. David Mendelovitz from Tel Aviv University - a serial entrepreneur and vice president of Samsung. Prof. Mandelovich will participate in the upcoming meeting of the Silicon Club entitled: "Game Changer: How Artificial Intelligence was able to bring about a revolution in the various industries". The meeting will be held in the Leon Auditorium, Kohler School of Management, Tel Aviv University on Tuesday September 26, 2023 from 18:30-21:30 p.m.

Prof. David Mendelovitz, a leading expert in artificial intelligence from Tel Aviv University, serial entrepreneur and vice president at Samsung, discusses the opportunities and threats of artificial intelligence in various fields.

"In the industry, especially in the worlds of chips, cameras and image processing for which I am responsible at Samsung, there is an extensive development of artificial intelligence where the opportunities are more prominent than the threats," says Mandelovitz. |For example, processing infrastructures have a variety of algorithms that improve performance - processing image after image on a phone incorporates significant AI. Face, motion and gesture recognition comes next. For technologists, AI is more of an opportunity than a threat. As a chip and sensor specialist, AI has made a real revolution, greatly improving the efficiency of silicon. Beyond exceptional performance, we've seen cost reduction beyond Moore's Law using more stochastic versus deterministic algorithms."

Balance between opportunity and threat in academia

"In academia there is a balance between threat and opportunity. There is a threat that students and researchers will be able to access online information - such as answers to assignments and even copy chapters of articles. This can distort the fairness of learning in the academy. There are different approaches to overcome this. For example, today considerable resources are found in an increased combination of study requirements that will allow the assignments to be structured so that they are agnostic to artificial intelligence."

“In terms of opportunities, AI has become a supporting discipline in almost every field imaginable. If we thought that artificial intelligence was only useful for genetic editing or weather forecasting algorithms, it would be a mistake. It is relevant to research in literature, law and almost any university field. Today it is seen as part of the basic toolbox for students. Some universities are even making AI skills mandatory.”

"I want to separate the academic use of artificial intelligence tools from artificial intelligence research - these are two different directions that may require a different discourse. For users, it should be in every student's toolbox. But in AI research, there are huge changes. In the past, engineers now reach more surprising fields - ethics of artificial intelligence, management studies and more. It has become an important, perhaps critical, research discipline."

I recently had conversations with the president of Tel Aviv University, who told me that he has given a number of humanities and social sciences faculties jobs to integrate artificial intelligence in these two fields."

Is this a hype or something that will be with us forever?

Regarding hype - when we were young, new things like personal computers and then the Internet seemed shiny. But they worked well over time and everyone was happy. Later viruses and spyware appeared. Artificial intelligence today has some childhood problems but work is being done to overcome them. Meanwhile we see the misuse of fakes and fakes. So the fight between fake creators and fake fighters will intensify like the antivirus battles 20 years ago. This is a natural life cycle for breakthrough technology - initial bugs and later negative exploitation. This indicates the health of artificial intelligence that it is not immune to technological difficulties in the past."

According to him, at Samsung he is responsible for all the cameras found in Samsung products. Although Samsung is not in the automotive market, we also sell chips to other companies, which use them in automotive projects."
